Today we’d like to introduce you to Iris Brimm
Hi Iris, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in a small town with limited opportunities, It seemed natural to embrace the mindset that there were bigger and better experiences and opportunities outside of the hometown setting. Because of my strong faith, I believed that the world had something great in store for me. This mindset was a driving force in a decision to select a college in Georgia that was as far as possible from the small town where I was raised. As a result I chose the University West of Georgia and majored in Mass Communications with a concentration in Journalism and a minor in Marketing. Completing the degree program in three years, graduating early, and also during the pandemic presented a circumstance where opportunities for an internship just were not available. Therefore my hands-on experiences were limited to what the college had provided.
Fortunately, attending a job fair at the college, I was offered employment at a small Production Company which was short lived after three months due to budget cuts. This was devastating, but because of my faith, quitting my quest to pursue a career was not an option. Having danced in a dance company and participating in numerous competitions during my teenage years, I was able to teach dance at a local dance studio every day while desperately searching for employment in my field. After a while, I started to loose hope and thought it was best to just return back home and live with my parents. However, a month before my lease ended at the apartment complex where I lived, I received a job offer for a marketing position at a law firm in Atlanta. Needless to say, I took it. At this job, I learned not only all things marketing and social media, but also how to work in a professional, corporate office. In this tough working environment, I was underpaid and overworked and constantly overwhelmed with the feeling of being taken for granted. It was an extremely toxic environment which impacted my self-esteem and confidence. After six months of being in the position, I decided it was best for my mental health to leave the firm.
Now, I was living in Atlanta Georgia with a year lease and no form of income. I went into panic mode! Falling back on my competitive dancing background, I got the idea to apply to every competition I ever competed in, and one of the biggest competitions in America reached out to me. Within two weeks, I went on tour for six months working at dance competitions. On tour, I traveled to sixteen different cities and got on over thirty-six flights out of Hartsfield Jackson Airport. After the tour was over, fortunately, I took an offer to work as a Wedding Coordinator which I enjoyed immensely. Consequently, after 3 months, I had to accept that the income as a Wedding Coordinator did not support my lifestyle. During this time, I returned to the job market and found my current position as the Social Media Manager at Buckhead Law. This position presents challenges, calls for creativity, and allows an opportunity to apply my degrees training in Mass Communication, Journalism, and Marketing as well as incorporate the experiences I have gained along the way. Everything I could have ever hoped and dreamed of in a job are at my fingertips. The journey to this position has been taxing to say the least, but the experiences along the way allowed me an opportunity to develop skills and attributes that will serve a lifetime.
When I graduated college, my hopes were to work in the Film Industry in some way. To say the least, I was devastated when it didn’t work out the way that I had planned. However, getting the position at the small Production Company allowed me the opportunity to develop my filming production skills and the position at the first law firm allowed the development of my marketing skills and experiences, and traveling from from state to state during my employment with the dance competition strengthened my confidence and restoreed my self-esteem. The combination of these skills, along with my degree training have provided the tools necessary to be super efficient at my dream job which is working in Social Media Marketing and Management.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey has presented a variety of obstacles. The first obstacle was finding the perfect job that suited my attributes. Even though I received a job offer soon after college, the job location was in my college’s town, and I had hoped to move to the city. The second obstacle I experienced was being on a job directly after panmedic and experiencing a budget cut that caused my job to dissipate. These obstacles had a big impact on my confidence. After these experiences, it took almost a year to get my career path back on track. Although I love teaching dance and it will always be a passion, it did not provide an income sustainable for my lifestyle. Throughout the interviewing process, there were many times when I would get my hopes up just to be disappointed again, but quitting was not an option. Once I started the position at the first Law firm and experienced being in a toxic work environment, it had a major impact on my self-esteem. I began to question my abilities to be successful in a corporate work setting, or if I was even qualified or strong enough to work in corporate America. Deciding to leave the job was a gigantic step. Taking a job that required me to fly from state to state on tour was a major challenge because I had never been on a flight and now I would have to fly every weekend for the next 6 months. This was also the longest I had ever gone without seeing my family. After the tour was over and becoming a Wedding Coordinator and loving it but was not making enough money to live comfortably, my faith was at an all-time low but I still refused to quit and held onto my hope to have a job in my degree training. After being relentless and never giving up hope, the job with Buckhead Law came at the perfect time and all my experiences were just preparation and I was ready!
There will be many obstacles and the only way to overcome them is to embrace the concept that Quitting is not an Option!

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Atlanta is a city full of opportunity—a place where dreams can become reality. One of the things I appreciate most about living here is the ability to network and connect with so many incredible people. The city offers endless things to do, from enjoying the energy of The Battery to relaxing at Piedmont Park or hiking at Stone Mountain. The convenience of having everything so close by is something I don’t take for granted, especially after growing up in a town where a trip to Chick-fil-A or Target meant a 45-minute drive.
That said, one of the biggest challenges of living in Atlanta is the traffic. Unlike my hometown, where a 15-minute drive could take me to an entirely different town, here, it just means sitting in congestion. The traffic can be frustrating, and the drivers certainly keep things interesting! But despite the challenges of navigating the roads, Atlanta’s opportunities, culture, and accessibility make it a city I truly love.
