Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Mack.
Hi Jasmine, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My dad would always ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I would say the famous doctor, police officer, teacher and etc. Basically, a new answer every time he asked. One day I started doing my hair and my mom would always say, “keep your hands out your head so it can grow.” That definitely did not stop me because look at me now. I started doing hair at 12. I would do my hair then eventually family and friends started asking. I went to Paine College for business administration thinking that was the best route to take to be a business owner. Until I did research and found out that you don’t need a degree to be a business owner. So, I left Paine College and went to Virginia College and Graduated from cosmetology school. I am now a Master Cosmetologist and Hair Loss Specialist. My business JP Beauty Collection came about when I started making my own hair products for my clients. I am very big on making sure my client’s hair is healthy. I created my own moisturizer shampoo and deep conditioner started selling virgin hair bundles, mink lashes and headbands. I got the name because I wanted my clients to have a collection of products to maintain their hair. JP Stands for “Just Pure”. The reason I say “Just Pure” is because I wanted my clients to know that they have pure beauty, I am just here to enhance it.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Starting out in the hair industry was not easy. I was 20 years old in a hair salon with a lot of established hairstylists. I was pretty much going to work off of faith. No one wanted to sit in the new hairstylist chair. I would have my family come to get their hair done for free and my prices were extremely low. At that time, I did not care because I was in grind mode trying to show off my gift. Eventually, as people started seeing my skill set things took off. I will say people tried to keep me locked in one category which were braiding hair. I had to establish myself and let people know I was not only licensed to do hair but makeup, manicure, pedicure, facials and lashes. I just kept thinking to myself my gift will make room for me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The pandemic taught me a lot as an individual and as a business owner. I realized that I wasn’t as essential as I thought. When I came to that understanding, I had to put myself in a position to make myself essential. Before the pandemic, I only sold virgin hair bundles, lashes and headbands. My clients were calling asking what to use on their hair and how can they stop their hair from breaking. So, I had to get creative and make a shampoo and conditioner to help their hair stay healthy. I also took the time to get certified to prepare for those that might have experienced hair loss due to wearing wigs, improper eating, or just started a new medication while staying home. So, I would not say it was a bad experience, but it definitely was an eye-opener for those who work for their self.
