Today we’d like to introduce you to Jill and David Scruggs
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
David was introduced to photography while attending the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications and later carried a camera as a reporter for the Orlando Sentinel. Although his career path took him into several professions over the years, he held onto his love of photography. He turned it into a paying sideline in 2012 as a wedding photographer and over time evolved into a fine art portrait artist.
Jill, a Doctor of Physical Therapy by education and profession, found her way into photography through her pastime as a local model. David hired her for an editorial photoshoot, and the two eventually became inseparable. She wanted to get behind the camera and soaked up David’s knowledge. At first the student, Jill’s now a teacher in her own right.
They formed One Soul Photography in 2018 and launched the brand One Soul Boudoir in 2019. Originally working out of the home, they opened an 800 square foot studio on Marietta Square in 2021 and expanded into a 3,000 square foot studio in Kennesaw in 2022, where they’re now located.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While their business has grown steadily and the Facebook fan group, One Soul Women, now has about 5,000 Greater Atlanta women as members, there’s rarely a week that goes by without a new challenge arising. If it isn’t a back-office technology issue, it’s disruptive changes in social media advertising algorithms and policies.
But Jill and David are problem solvers as well as creatives and visionaries. But what successful business owner isn’t all those?
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
