Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonaya Johnson.
Hi Jonaya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my cosmetology career 20 years ago. I graduated from Daniel’s Hairstyling Academy in Muskegon, Michigan on April 12, 2003 and received my license shortly after. It’s hard to believe it’s been so long because it seems like yesterday. But I started doing hair in my Parent’s basement on family and friends, and from there I worked in a few salons including JCPenney Salon where I received most of my salon education after Cosmetology school. In 2007, I chose to move to Atlanta where I could get more exposure as a stylist. I worked in a private salon for eight years before finally branching out into my own salon suite today with Phenix Salons. While the big salon is great socially, I enjoy the 1 on 1 time I am able to offer my clients in a suite setting.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?It has not always been easy and still is not. Often social media makes it look like everyone was this star stylist to begin, but in reality everyone has to start somewhere. When I first started, I was not perfect and had a lot to learn, but I always had and still have a passion for hair that keeps me going in this field, because it’s easy to quit on those days where you have 0 or just 1 client. No one likes to talk about that, but it is a reality of our industry. Thankfully, I have loyal clients that continue to support me and that is what I am thankful for. In this field, you must be able to continuously evolve and LEARN…I am not above learning a new technique. It keeps your career fresh and interesting. Some of my struggles were confidence. I’ve grown to trust myself and to be confident, without confidence, it’s hard to stay in this field. You must be confident in your skills and abilities. Everyone has their own niche. Took me a while to find mine, which is healthy hair above all else.
As you know, we’re big fans of Nay’Latrese Hair Loft. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My business is Nay’Latrese Hair Loft located inside of Phenix Salon Suites in Norcross, GA Suite 132. I am an independent hairstylist that specializes in natural and relaxed hair. I offer silk press, extensions, and color as well as other services. Although I offer a range of hair services, my main focus is healthy hair. I give each of my clients a consultation to address their hair needs and help them to develop a plan to keep their hair healthy in-between visits. I also offer product that helps them to maintain their hair routine at home as well. The thing that sets me apart from others is that I always stay up to date on new ways that I can help my clients on their road to a healthy head of hair. I am continuously learning new ways to style, cut, color, weave, etc. And I always try to offer the best customer service I can while always remaining professional. I also take a very strong interest in keeping my clients happy. I am most proud of the fact that I took a leap of faith to be an independent stylist and I encourage other stylists to do the same if it is something you have always wanted to do.
