Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Hughes.
Hi Jordan , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started Redwood Outdoor Designs in January of 2018. I had experience in the landscape/outdoor services industry through high school and college jobs working for local lawn care companies and a plant nursery. I started the company with small goals – I just needed a way to pay my way through my masters program – but the company grew larger than I ever expected. We grossed a little over two million in 2025 and hope to be doing give million per year by 2030.
Almost all of our growth has come through word of mouth and reviews. Our mission is to bring excellence to an industry that has very little. Our goal is to be the very best is two ways: the highest quality of work and the best customer experience. And as it turns out, when you do great work and provide a great experience through the process, clients are happy and the business grows.
What we do is outdoor design and build. But who we are is a small team of amazing people working hard to provide an amazing experience for amazing clients.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Because our growth has been primarily through referrals and reviews, our path has been relatively smooth. The hardest problem to solve has been building a team of excellent people to keep up with demand. Right now, we are in a great place, but we’re always working to expand our network and find great people to work with.
We’ve been impressed with Redwood Outdoor Designs, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We offer high end outdoor design and build services in Northeast Georgia. Core services for us include retaining walls; paver patios, walkways, and driveways; custom pools; pool remodels; irrigation systems, plant/tree design and installation; grading; sod; water features; etc.
We offer industry leading quality of work. We follow guidelines set by the Concrete Masonry and Hardscapes Association and are a Belgard Authorized Contractor. We offer design services like 2D site plans and 3D renderings to help our clients visualize their new space before agreeing to any contract. We build outdoor spaces that last.
We also offer industry leading customer experience. We emphasize communication in our team and internal training. We know that our clients are making a large investment into their property and are trusting us to take good care of them. We work hard to make sure our clients are always well informed, have all their questions answered, and are able to enjoy the process, rather than anxiously awaiting problems or issues.
At Redwood, we are proud of our reputation for excellence. From online reviews, to relationships with local suppliers, we stand out from the pack. We stand out by being ruthlessly honest, by teaching every property like it’s our own, and by operating with kindness and respect at all times.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I’ll give two lessons: a business lesson and a personal lesson.
Business:
I’ve learned that if you focus on being excellent in what you do, everything else falls into place. Business owners can be pulled in dozens of different directions at the same time. There’s always a new shiny thing that feels like it could solve your problems. But fundamentally, what matters is that you offer excellence in your industry. If you are excellent, work work will come. If you are excellent, great team members will come. If you are excellent, profit will come. Focus on creating real value for real people and you will win.
Personal:
I’ve learned that in the highs and lows of business, my faith matters more than my business success. As a small business owner, my joy and contentment can swing up and down with the wins and losses of the business, but when I focus on my faith – the joy that I have in God – I can be content and happy in all circumstances.
