Today we’d like to introduce you to Katy Costner.
Hi Katy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up in Dallas, Texas with an architect dad and a mom who would always take us to the coolest antique stores. Needless to say, I was constantly redecorating my room. That said, business was always a passion and the sensible career choice so I went to Clemson University studying French and International Trade before getting my master’s in Communication… but grad school only came after I decided to go to interior design school and dropped out just as quickly as I enrolled. My corporate life post-grad school started at The Home Depot working with their interiors group, Home Decorators Collection, where I helped with everything from social media to photo shoots. It was the perfect combination of all my passions and it was at that job when I started taking on friends as interior design clients on the side. Fast forward a few years later. I was still working in corporate America and helping friends on the side but with the birth of my second child, I realized that it was time to go out on my own completely. I took a few months to finalize the business side of my company, left corporate America and never looked back. We’re going on our 6th official year here at Costner Studio and have recently pivoted to an online interior design company helping clients across the nation decorate their homes while loving every minute of it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes and no! We’ve been blessed with the best clients and projects as a full-service interior design studio. The struggles along the way have honestly been more recent, including shipping and project delays. At the start of the COVID pandemic, we were all forced to slow down and I really used that time to determine the future of the business. The result of that reflection was clear–a pivot from full-service clients to online interior design projects. The transition has taken almost 2 years but has been so worth the time and energy involved!
