Inspiring Conversations with Kisma Foreman of Glenwood Scholar Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kisma Foreman.

Hi Kisma, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As poet Langston Hughes wrote, “Life For Me Ain’t Been No Crystal Stair”. My story begins as a child growing up in Atlanta. Drugs and the streets caused me and my three sisters’ too loose our parent’s emotional, financial, and physical support as a parent is expected to do for their child. It was a difficult time in our lives; just a step-stone away from entering state child services.

My oldest sister intervened and was determined to provide and raise us as best as she could and ensure that we were guided in the right direction. She always told us “You are in Control of your Own Destiny!” That stuck in my head and started me on my journey to control my own destiny. Although I was a single teenage Mom of two girls, life didn’t give me much by way of economics. My struggles, however, turned out to be my successes. I have always been told and felt that I have a great mind, heart, and spirit for business and for serving others, especially for children and the elderly.

Circumstances, positive and negative, have formed me and my failures but most of all my successes. My goals were to do great things for myself, my children and others. Some of my accomplishments came from trial and error but most came from the sincere desire in my heart to help myself, others and to control my own destiny. My first attempt at giving back with what I had been blessed with was my establishment of WISE OWL LEARNING ACADEMY which I started in the cafeteria of my church, Holy Temple Church. My childcare center was so successful that we outgrew the space as well as the attendees. I was encouraged by the changes I saw in the children and the appreciation from their parents.

My next venture was GLENWOOD SCHOLAR ACADEMY. This venture became one of my most successful. To this day. GLENWOOD SCHOLAR ACADEMY serves approximately 70 attendees and I employ six dedicated staff members. My Academy caters to the underprivileged child in an underserved community with an unrepresented family structure. Though my children are of underemployed parents, in my academy, they are not under supported or underprovided for. Though my children are vastly underprivileged with economic disadvantages, in my academy, they are not unloved or attended to.

Included in my dedication to a humanitarian experience, I added my love for the elderly. Throughout my life, elderly people have been instrumental in aiding my road to success. I encompassed my passion for the positive treatment of the elderly by starting EMBRACE HEALTH CARE AGENCY. I had previously worked as a CNA. I saw their needs and experienced their wants. I felt that I could be effective in helping to make their lives fruitful and beneficial.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
With the help and guidance of my sister, I was able to finance and advance myself. My business ventures did not come easy nor my road to success smooth. I experienced some “shut doors” in my business plans and I fought with some personal issues with individuals, yet I was determined and I stayed focused.
