Inspiring Conversations with La Tonya Klish-Polk of Unify Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to La Tonya Klish-Polk.

La Tonya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Well, it all started a little like this… lol.

During my long-standing career as a professional student, I was this close to applying for the nursing program at my local community college. Then I had a chat with one of my classmates, who was also going into nursing. She said, “Girl, why not apply to a university nursing program instead? You’ll have a better shot, and you can walk out with a BSN instead of an LPN; it’ll take about the same amount of time anyway.”

So fast-forward, turns out, I had enough credits to graduate in the fall. I thought, Okay, cool, I’m about to apply to the HBCU, Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, FL, and go for their nursing program.

BUT… (because there’s always a “but,” right?) during my last semester, as I was prepping to graduate, I had a moment. I was like, hmm… I don’t think I want to be a nurse anymore. WHAT?! After working as a certified nursing assistant for 5–6 years, seeing a whole lot, doing even more, I finally said, I think I don’t want to do this anymore.

Cue the existential crisis. This was about to be my fourth major change, so I had to sit myself down for a real heart-to-heart. I started thinking about what truly lights me up, what I enjoy, what I’m passionate about, and what gives me joy. And the answer? People. But not just “people”, helping people. I realized my passions are helping, talking, seeing people succeed, and the joys of being a change agent in the lives of others.

So (you’ve probably guessed by now), I decided to go into counseling and coaching. At first, I swore I’d never counsel couples, but now, it’s one of the parts of my job I love most. I work with kids (12 and up), teens, and adults. It can be heavy at times, sure, but honestly? I love what I do.

I’m grateful for how far I’ve come, and I’m excited for what’s ahead as I keep growing into the best therapist I can be—for myself and for the people who trust me to walk beside them on their journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggles along the way have been building the confidence to do the job of counseling. There’s actually someone sitting across from you, trusting you, or working to gain your trust so they can feel comfortable, while you’re giving them professional feedback and helping them through a process of healing. Having the confidence within myself to know that I am doing the best I can with what I’ve learned, and with the knowledge I continue to gain, is essential. In addition, applying what I’ve learned and continuing to develop my professional skills helps me better serve clients, because each of them are different and brings unique needs to the session. However, when they return each week, I smile, realizing I’m doing something right.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My strength comes from God first, and the support that I have gotten from my family and close friends is phenomenal. However, it’s the joy I get when I see growth in my clients and also when In gain clients from word of mouth. It makes me feel a little better to know that someone thought enough of me or felt that I helped them so well that referred their family, friend, or coworker to me. That’s the the joy that keeps me going.
