Today we’d like to introduce you to Leanne Shub.
Leanne, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I knew I wanted to be a therapist in elementary school. I did a lot of volunteer work from a young age and found that when I was helping others, I felt connected to something greater than myself. I ended up needing a therapist to address my own challenges with anxiety and it was in the relationship with my therapist where I just knew in my innermost self that this was my purpose in life. After graduate school, I felt something was missing. I had learned all about how to help a client explore themselves through various talk therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy but it just didn’t feel like enough to me. I knew from my own healing journey that talking about my challenges only got me so far and that despite all the talking, I still felt this uneasiness in my body that I couldn’t explain in words. So, naturally I left society for a bit and lived in an ashram as one would. I studied to become a yoga teacher and was able to live like a monk, embracing the yogic lifestyle.
What I discovered was that my body needed nourishing and I didn’t need to verbally process or understand the sensations in my body in order to provide that nourishment. I could use movement and breathwork to simply become curious about my internal world. I found that the more curious I became about what I was feeling inside, the more capacity I had to tolerate a wider range of emotions and sensations that felt less tolerable to me prior.
Since becoming a Registered Yoga Teacher, I’ve gone on to complete various trainings in an effort to refine my skills, allowing me to hold space on the mat for individuals who are healing from various forms of trauma. I also became trained in Somatic and Attachment Focused (S.A.F.E.) EMDR, which is a specific modality of treatment used to heal from trauma.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I spent years and years in school to become a therapist and yet I learned absolutely nothing about how to start and maintain a business. There wasn’t even one class on this topic. I’m grateful for the therapists who have been successfully in business for many years, who were gracious in sharing their knowledge and wisdom with me. It’s been amazing to grow and evolve along this journey.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Nourish to Flourish Therapy is a space for holistic healing from traumatic experiences/family of origin wounds, anxiety, and relationship challenges. As I shared before, I fuse yoga, and other body-based techniques as well as EMDR into my work with clients to help them heal. I work with clients from an attachment-based lens, meaning that I deeply consider how one learned to relate with parents and caregivers in their childhood and how that relational pattern continues to play out, impacting how they connect with themselves and others.
I also provide individualized and group yoga, breathwork, and meditation classes and workshops for non-therapy clients as well. I’m actually offering free trauma-informed yoga classes every Sunday in May. I encourage those who might be interested in trying them to sign up on my website. I have some workshops and classes that I’m currently planning, which I’m excited to share about in the near future.
