Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorrie Thomas Ross
Hi Lorrie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I don’t know how to describe how I got to where I am today. Perhaps a miracle, serendipity or the universe having my back? My career path was not a typical one. I was on my own at 18 and had dropped out of college by the time I was 20, since I was unable to work full-time and balance school demands. I went from working at JC Penney to Saks Fifth Avenue to being recruited by a personal shopping client to sell online advertising in the dot com boom. Nobody asked me how old I was or where I went to college and I think I probably overcompensated to make up for my lack of degree. My career took a turn when I was asked to transition from a sales role to lead customer acquisition marketing efforts at the same company. My depth of sales expertise allowed me to embrace the breadth of marketing solutions (search, ads, copy, email marketing, affiliate marketing, branding and more). I found myself totally in love with marketing – how all the pieces came together to support sales. When I was asked to teach college courses, my career took a huge turn. I was still working my corporate job by day and teaching nights and weekends. Most of the students were small business owners, entrepreneurs or marketing professionals. When my students were coming in week after week sharing success stories, I knew I wanted to make an impact with companies that operated with passion and purpose. I stayed in corporate for a few more years then finally decided to take the leap and start my own consultancy in 2005 to help great leaders and great companies have the same great marketing that big companies had. I cannot believe that it’s been almost 20 years that I’ve been my own boss!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have always been bumps along the road. I see now that my challenges were life-experience building opportunities who have allowed me to be the resilient, gritty, passionate professional that I am today. I’m thankful for life experience that allows me to navigate challenges more seamlessly.
