Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Bhamaraniyama.
Hi Matt, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My professional background has always revolved around working in restaurants. I have had many different titles throughout the years, ranging from bussing to bartending to managing. Being a business owner was something I always wanted to do. Every time my cousins, also my business partners, would hang out, we would talk about starting our own restaurant. They also have many years of experience working in the hospitality business, so it naturally made sense for us. We all worked under a well-known Thai family in Atlanta and we thought that this was something we can accomplish as well.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Similar to anything, starting something new always poses many challenges. We all knew how to do the work, but learning the ins and outs of actually owning a restaurant and how to start it from the ground up was quite difficult. Opening during the pandemic was always a huge gamble that we took. Even with the obstacles that we faced, we would do it over and over again in a heartbeat. Although we found ourselves working seven days a week for a couple of months before we had any employees, we are truly happy to say that our family has a place to call our own.
As you know, we’re big fans of TydeTate Kitchen. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My restaurant is called TydeTate Kitchen located inside of the newly built food hall, Chattahoochee Food Works in the Upper Westside. The name TydeTate came from my nephews Tyde and Tate. The reason we chose this name was because it goes well with what we are hoping to achieve with the restaurant. We are aiming to provide guests with comfort Thai food. Something that we would eat at home. We want all of our guests to enjoy the food and also feel as though they are part of the TTK family every time they visit. What we are most known for and proud of are our Curry Puffs. My aunt/head chef used to make them for her friends. Over time, more and more people would ask her if she could make it for them and we thought that this could be a good opportunity to introduce the world to our home cooking. We started off doing pop-ups and eventually found our home at The Chattahoochee Food Works.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
I would have to give credit to my business partners/cousins, Bank, Sai, and Pak. We all have a common goal in mind and we push each other everyday to achieve it. Opening up your own business is no small task. With the help of my cousins, we were able to divide and conquer. We are all tasked with our own specific jobs, but at the same time we all lean on each other to better the business in all aspects. You always hear that you should shy away from working with family, but I believe that if you have a strong team and a common goal, you will be able to accomplish great things. Sometimes we have our differences, but we all know at the end of the day that we want the best for others and for this business.
