Inspiring Conversations with Michael Martin Jr. of M&M Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Martin Jr.

Hi Michael, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I first picked up a camera at 15 years old; technically it was my phone camera but that’s where the story starts, nonetheless. I started taking pictures of my surroundings; the dogs in the street and the leaves on the ground and even the water droplets on the morning newspaper became my daily muse. I loved how much power I held in my hands to be able to tell a story visually. I did some research on the internet about cell phone photography and came to find that there were full on art galleries with people’s work that was shot on a cell phone, complete with crazy edits and filters and all kinds of intriguing details.

From that moment, I was locked in, I wanted to be great and be in an art gallery one day and I knew at that moment, I no longer wanted to be an astronaut, I no longer wanted to be a professional musician, I no longer wanted to be a soccer player or a track star or an environmental scientist; I wanted to be a professional photographer; I wanted to tell stories of the world.

Fast forward to 2021 and I’ve made my 15 year old self proud. At 22, I’ve accomplished so much including being published 6 times, a pending international publication, and currently, an art gallery feature.

I continue to strive to be the best that I can possibly be, with a dream of being one of the world’s best one day coming. When it’s all said and done, I want my work to be my legacy, I want people to see my work and feel everything that I put into it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many obstacles and the road has not been easy. The most impactful struggle has been battling the lack of support from my immediate family in my early years of the business. Words hurt, let me tell you. There were definitely moments where I struggled mentally to keep going, but it was at those moments that I held on a little tighter to my dream, and when I look back now, it was worth it.

We’ve been impressed with M&M Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of M&M Photography based in Connecticut. I specialize in beauty, lifestyle, editorial and high fashion styles, and offer other commercial services as well (i.e weddings, maternity, etc).

How do you think about luck?
I don’t attribute luck to my success or failures; it’s either been a blessing, or a lesson. Either way, God shows me exactly what I need to do and where I should be and I listen. I trust Him and follow the course set out for me.
