Inspiring Conversations with Michelle Roberts of Dr Shells Soul Food Kitchen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Roberts.

Hi Michelle, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Heart and Soul Behind Dr. Shell’s Soul Food Kitchen

For Chef Michelle “Dr. Shell” Roberts, cooking has always been more than a meal — it’s a ministry of love, family, and community. Her passion for food was born from the kitchens of three remarkable women: her Granny Mary Lee Tyler, Aunt Gussie, and Grandma Penn. “The recipes I have were passed down through generations,” she says. “I was blessed to have such inspirational women in my life who taught me the value of love, faith, and good food.”

That deep-rooted heritage inspired her to share her family’s legacy with the world through Dr. Shell’s Soul Food Kitchen, where every dish is made from the heart and seasoned with soul. “Everyone who experiences my food becomes family,” she adds. “It’s about creating joy and connection through every bite.”

Launched five years ago during the pandemic, Dr. Shell’s Soul Food Kitchen began as a mission to feed essential workers who longed for a hot, comforting meal during uncertain times. What started as an act of service quickly grew into a thriving business offering catering, private chef services, meal prep, and weekly soul food deliveries across the Atlanta area.

A proud Atlanta native, Michelle balances two worlds — working as an IT professional by day and as a soulful chef by night. Her dual careers reflect her work ethic and drive to uplift her community. Beyond the kitchen, she is a devoted mother of three adult children and a doting grandmother, an avid Atlanta Falcons fan, and a champion for women’s empowerment and community advocacy.

With over 30 years of cooking experience, Chef Shell continues to pour love and purpose into every meal she creates. Her vision goes far beyond food — it’s about feeding futures, building community, and creating a seat at the table for everyone.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were days I didn’t know how I’d cover kitchen rental fees or buy supplies, but somehow, God always made a way,” she shares. “I’ve learned that purpose will push you further than fear ever could.”

Like many small business owners, she faced her share of obstacles — navigating rising food costs, inconsistent funding, and the challenges of growing a business during uncertain economic times. Yet, her determination never wavered. “Every struggle taught me something,” she says. “It taught me to be resourceful, to network, to apply for grants, and to keep showing up even when it’s hard.”

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Dr. Shell’s Soul Food Kitchen is more than a catering company — it’s a movement built on love, legacy, and community. Founded by Chef Michelle “Dr. Shell” Roberts, the business was born during the pandemic out of a desire to nourish essential workers with comforting, home-cooked meals when the world felt uncertain. What began as a small act of service has grown into a thriving brand known across metro Atlanta for authentic soul food infused with purpose.

We proudly offer Catering, Corporate Events, Meal Prep, and Soul-Delicious Desserts — each crafted with heart, heritage, and the spirit of Southern hospitality. Every dish reflects recipes passed down through generations of strong women in my family — made with the same care, love, and flavor that filled our Sunday dinner tables. From perfectly seasoned fried chicken and creamy mac and cheese to scratch-made peach cobbler, our food tells a story of family, faith, and flavor.

What sets Dr. Shell’s Soul Food Kitchen apart is our commitment to community and connection. We don’t just serve meals — we create experiences that bring people together. Whether it’s a wedding, corporate luncheon, or neighborhood pop-up, our goal is always to leave guests feeling loved, appreciated, and full — body and soul. We also take pride in giving back by teaching youth cooking classes, feeding the homeless, and partnering with local organizations to address food insecurity.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the trust and emotional connection we’ve built with our customers. People don’t just come for the food — they come for the feeling. Our motto is “Soul Food Beyond the Plate,” because everything we do, from presentation to service, carries intention and care.

I want readers to know that Dr. Shell’s Soul Food Kitchen isn’t just a business — it’s a reflection of who I am and the values I live by: love, service, and legacy. Every plate tells a story, and every customer becomes part of our extended family.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was a very determined child — the oldest of three girls, with my sisters being seven and thirteen years younger than me. From an early age, I naturally stepped into the role of leader, nurturer, and protector. Being the oldest taught me responsibility, patience, and resilience — qualities that still guide me today.

I’ve always had a love for excellence and leadership. Even as a young girl, I relished every opportunity to take charge, organize, and inspire others. In school, I was enrolled in college preparatory classes and always pushed myself to go beyond expectations. My academic drive led me to attend a Historically Black College and University (HBCU), where I continued to grow both personally and academically.

Outside the classroom, I embraced school spirit as a Flag Girl, enjoying the rhythm, discipline, and pride that came with performing. Those experiences shaped my confidence and teamwork — the same traits that now fuel my work as a chef, entrepreneur, and community advocate.

Looking back, I realize that leadership wasn’t something I learned — it was something I was born with. That early determination became the foundation for everything I’ve built today — from my family to my business, and the legacy I’m still creating through Dr. Shell’s Soul Food Kitchen.
