Today we’d like to introduce you to Mohammad Nour.
Hi Mohammad, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My career journey is a testament to the transformative power of passion and perseverance. It all began as an architecture student, diligently immersing myself in the world of weighty calculations and mathematical rigors. However, halfway through the program, I came to a profound realization – my true calling was to unleash my creativity and artistic spirit. The catalyst for this pivotal shift came from a chance discovery of my friends’ mesmerizing drawings within the graphic design major. Their work ignited a spark within me, and I embarked on an artistic quest, drawing inspiration from anyone and anywhere I could find it. In an era without internet access, I scoured the underground markets, seeking old textbooks and tutorials to nurture my newfound passion.
Over time, I honed my skills and discovered a deep affinity for animation and character design. Despite my architectural commitments, I persevered, dedicating two additional years to my degree while simultaneously mastering 3D modeling, sculpting, and figure drawing. The pursuit of creative excellence had become my unwavering mission.
Upon completing my architecture degree, I cast my ambitions wider, applying to universities and programs across different schools. In this pursuit, I encountered the prestigious Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in the South, a beacon of artistic education. My dedication was rewarded with a scholarship totaling nearly $17,000, allowing me to embark on the challenging yet rewarding journey toward a Master’s degree. My time at SCAD was marked by resilience, and I graduated with a GPA of 3.6, armed with newfound expertise and unwavering determination.
With my skills finely tuned, I ventured into the world, collaborating with renowned film, TV, and game companies worldwide. In the fast-paced computer graphics industry, staying ahead meant embracing continuous learning and adapting to new tools and software each year. The relentless pursuit of growth was my mantra, and I thrived in the ever-evolving landscape.
However, my journey wasn’t without its share of adversities. Immigration challenges and extended periods away from my chosen path tested my resolve. I weathered these storms with resilience, emerging stronger with every setback. Personal hurdles and losses served as poignant lessons, reinforcing the importance of cherishing the present and savoring the joy of doing what one loves.
Today, I stand as a sculptor and grooming artist at Craftyapes, a testament to the unwavering spirit of an artist who has surmounted countless obstacles to reach their goals. In the midst of it all, I’ve learned that the true essence of life lies in finding joy in every moment, especially when you’re doing what you love.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Amidst the chapters of my career journey, I encountered obstacles that put my resilience to the test. One particularly challenging episode unfolded when a major corporation, which I had pinned my hopes on, failed to fulfill their promise. They kept me hanging in uncertainty until a mere two months remained on my work permit’s expiration date. Landing a job within such a narrow window seemed like a daunting task, but life’s irony would soon reveal itself.
On the very last day of my work permit’s validity, I received an unexpected job offer. The clock was ticking, and I scrambled to file all the necessary paperwork to secure my stay in the country. However, fate dealt me another curveball. A letter arrived from the government shortly after I had relocated to Michigan for my new position, informing me that they had received my documents one day past the deadline. Despite my appeals, the response from the authorities was a disheartening shrug of indifference.
Left with no other recourse, I had to make the painful decision to leave the country. The path to returning to the place I had built my career was a grueling odyssey, testing my resolve to its limits. It’s a journey that defies succinct description, as it was marked by unrelenting challenges and emotional intensity. Overcoming this ordeal became one of the most profound tests of my determination, reminding me that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles, one can find the strength to persevere.
