Today we’d like to introduce you to Mykel T Brooks.
Hi Mykel T, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been immersed in music for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Fort Pierce, Florida, I got my start singing and playing in my father’s church. That early experience led me to blend soulful R&B melodies with the Southern rap sounds I was hearing around me, which eventually inspired me to launch my first label when I was 19. A distribution deal with Universal Music Group followed, and then a move to Atlanta, where I co-founded The Lab Rats Ink—a Grammy-nominated production team—and began collaborating with talented artists like Jacquees, Trey Songz, and K. Michelle. Over the years, I’ve branched out into songwriting, producing, A&R, and audio engineering, even making guest appearances on BET and Tyler Perry’s All The Queen’s Men. At the heart of it all, though, I’m still that kid who loves creating music, finding fresh talent, and sharing that passion with the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first launched Nomad Recordings in Tallahassee at 19, I was doing it all—booking studio time, engineering sessions, marketing, and trying to balance finances—without a real blueprint. I was also still in college at Bethune-Cookman, so managing classes on top of running a label taught me discipline fast. Securing a distribution deal with Universal was exciting, but it brought bigger expectations. When I moved from Florida to Atlanta, I had to rebuild my entire network—pitch myself to new artists, show labels I could deliver, and stay on top of the paperwork that comes with major deals.
Meanwhile, I was also a young father, trying to be there for my kids while working eighteen-hour production sessions. Sometimes it felt like I was spread too thin—either risking my family time or losing momentum in the studio. Plus, once I started working with more established artists, I faced the typical industry pressures: delayed royalty payments, last-minute contract tweaks, and producers or executives who had their own agendas. Those experiences pushed me to sharpen my business sense, make sure every deal was airtight, and be strategic about what projects I took on.
I learned the hard way that talent alone doesn’t keep you afloat. You need a clear structure for your label, an actual plan for development, and real knowledge of the legal side. Each hurdle—whether it was funding, scheduling, or juggling multiple roles—forced me to refine my approach. In the end, those challenges turned me into someone who could handle both the creative and corporate demands of the industry.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Power Moves Group (PMG) is the platform I use to merge my roles as an R&B artist, label owner, and publishing executive – GM$ Publishing stands for “Gimmie My Money” Publishing.
As someone who’s written tracks like “Money Everywhere” for RSVP (Ray J, Sammye, Bobby Valentino, Pleasure P) and produced alongside Grammy-nominated teams, I understand the music industry from the creative, the consumer and business sides.
My specialization is helping artists, songwriters, and producers navigate the full scope of music careers—from publishing and production to branding and distribution.
What sets us apart is that I’m not just an executive behind a desk; I’m an active artist and producer who’s faced the same hurdles our clients encounter.
I’m a one man band, but I prefer a team. That’s where the real success lives in the scaling up happens. If there’s one thing I want readers to take away, it’s that Power Moves Group / GM$ Publishing Co. is solid. We bring major-label expertise with a personal touch, giving creatives the boutique support system they need to succeed.
How do you define success?
I define success as the freedom to create on my own terms and the ability to uplift others in the process. It’s not just about chart positions or big-name collaborations—even though I’m grateful for those—it’s about whether I’m growing as an artist, supporting my family, and helping new voices break through. If my work pushes boundaries while staying true to who I am, then I’ve succeeded.
