Today we’d like to introduce you to Nigel Phiri.
Hi Nigel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born in Zambia and lived in Johannesburg, South Africa before relocating to the States in high school. I graduated in three years from Georgia State University as a Pre-Law major. I was awarded Georgia State University’s Phil Peters Scholarship as a junior and a senior. After graduating, I went straight to Mercer Law School.
While in law school, I got the Advanced Legal Writing, Researching & Drafting Certificate, I was chosen to be the Student Coach of the Wagner National Moot Court Team. I also served as the Executive Managing Editor of the Southern Journal of Policy & Justice, Volume IX, and I was a member of the Frederick Douglass Moot Court Team. I won Second Place for an article titled “Follow The Money: The Integrity of The Career Expert Witness” in The Expert Institute’s 2015 Legal Blog Post.
I started my career in the law in 2014. My first legal job was as an intern for State Farm during the summer after my second year of law school. After graduation, I needed to job to pay for student loans. I spent my first few years in practice defending large insurance defense companies. But I never felt fulfilled doing defense work.
In 2017, I partnered at a small plaintiff’s firm and began working against insurance companies. In 2019, I joined the largest plaintiff’s firm in the world, Morgan and Morgan. This later turned out to be a great decision. The training and lawyers I was around helped me develop tremendously as a trial lawyer. I handled small accidents all the way up to wrongful death cases. I obtained an $8.8 million dollar verdict in 2021 and was ranked #1 in settlement amounts obtained for the Atlanta Premises Liability Department.
After almost three years at Morgan & Morgan, I stepped out on faith and started my own firm in 2021. My office is in Buckhead, near Lenox Mall. The office is doing very well, now in its second year. I’ve added a full-time and a part-time employee and looking to keep growing.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been bumpy and I wouldn’t have made it without God and the people he placed in my life who have helped me along the way. I truly believe that tough times don’t last, tough people do. The road ahead looks much brighter than the road behind but it’s a blessing to have made it this far.
