Inspiring Conversations with Nikea Tate of HairXtrardinaire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikea Tate.

Hi Nikea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always known I wanted to be a hair stylist, I remember going to my Grandmothers beauty salon on Saturdays. I loved the reaction of her clients when she turned them to the mirror, pure joy and amazement. I wanted to be able to give people that same feeling. I went to cosmetology school right out of high school and became licensed the following year. I worked part-time under my mentor, Deborah Johnson, for ten years as an assistant, shampoo girl, then officially a stylist. When I was confident enough to step out on my own, I became a manager of a salon. During that time, I started to expand my dream of becoming a hairstylist on set, photoshoots, runways, tv and even going on tour. After touring the country, I became a mom, which slowed me down a bit, but gave me time to think about my next move of becoming a business owner and expand my brand, by giving exceptional service to my clientele, producing my own hair care line and candle line, among other ventures I’m still exploring.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No it has not. You cannot take a break in this business. It can cause a loss clientele, having to rebuild, which can lead to lack of motivation and confidence, the feeling of having to start over from scratch, regardless of the time and hard work you have put in. You’re right back at the beginning. Going on tour, for months at a time, caused a total loss of clientele, but it was worth the experience. Becoming a mother and having to adjust my hours, had caused a slight decrease in clients, but there’s always new ones willing to take their place. And just trying to figure out your next move when things become too stagnant or boring.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Professional Hair Stylist, Healthy haircare, Natural haircare and Locs.

Proud of the growth in my business, expanding into to my own products, I just have a hair and scalp oil for now, and candles, but the rest is coming.

What sets me apart? Im not sure, I would have to ask my clients that one. Everyone would probably say something different. LOL
