Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Charles.
Hi Olivia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m from Kingston, Jamaica. Even though I grew up in a third-world country, I always knew I was destined for greatness. I grew up with my mom side of the family. My aunt owned a beauty salon attached to the family home where I spent most of my time as a child. My mother always says she knew I would be in this field; as a toddler while being at the salon, I would take the extra hair extensions and fingernails laying around and apply them to myself, lol so basically, it’s in me, not on me. Consciously, for me my passion for the beauty industry sparked when me and my immediate family moved to America and my mom started selling Mary Kay products. That was like winter wonderland for me.
At 15/16, my mom’s sister who was enrolled in estheatician school asked me if she could give me a Brazilian wax, I literally had no idea what that was. Being the open & bubbly person that I am, I was like sure why not? That express was fascinating to me. I was like “Omg I’m so soft what is this witchery”. Obsessed with the results, I when and bought an at home wax kit and try the service on myself. One word, traumatic! Yet, I was still so fascinated by wax and how it worked.
I honestly never thought I would really work in the beauty industry, I looked at everything I was doing as expressive relief. I didn’t know which direction I was heading. And one day everything just clicked. I attended esthetic school, further knowledge and obtain my license.
After esthetician school, I worked a few places but I planted my roots in waxing when I started working at a local wax center to master my craft. Being that my mother and father are entrepreneurs, run a successful business for 16 years now and growing up in my aunt’s beauty salon. Naturally, I was inspired to opening Livvy’s Beauty Studio.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely was not a smooth road for me lol I started my business during the pandemic, in a time where it was important for us to stand six feet apart, my work is very intimate. I started my business off being mobile in 2020, & not everyone was comfortable having someone come to their home (truly thankful for the ones who did). I was a little discouraged but after reading this quote from Napoleon Hill “Do not wait: the time will never be ‘just right’. Start where you stand, and work whatever tools you may have at your command and better tools will be found as you go along.” It gave me the spark of motivation I needed to keep pushing myself with my business till I could get my own suite. I sacrifice every day, doing the things I might not want to do, but doing them anyway for a better future. Three months later, I put my deposit down for my suite. There’s nothing easy about starting and running a business but its sure is worth it. Once you start, you just learn as you go. When unexpected challenges would rare its ugly head, I learned to pivot.
