Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Burger
Hi Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My dream of being an Interior Designer started at the young age of 8 years old. I attended O’More College of Design where I graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in 2020. Unfortunately for me, and many others, my graduation looked very different due to covid, and a terminally ill father who passed away months before my graduation. With grief and covid restrictions, I began to question if I had chosen the right career path. After taking a couple of months off to process the hardships life handed me, I was able to come back around to my lifelong dream. I landed a job as an interior designer in a furniture store which allowed me to assist all salespeople with their projects and furniture sales. After a year in the furniture industry, I realized I was lacking the fulfillment I always dreamed of in my career, so I pivoted into residential design. Throughout the duration of my time at a residential design firm, JL Design, I was given the opportunity to grow, learn, and achieve beyond my wildest dreams. Some of these achievements include being quoted in Architectural Digest and Vogue Living Australia, winning a “small bathroom” award through ASID Tennessee, and being in the 2024 class of Thirty under 30 for the NKBA. After three years at JL Design, I opened up my own Interior Design firm, Studio 1950.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Becoming an interior designer has been one of the biggest challenges in my life. After deciding to relocate my life for design school at 18, my dad was diagnosed with dementia. This diagnosis and the decision to continue to chase my dream was one of the hardest decisions of my life. Being a college kid and a caretaker is something I will never forget. While getting through college, and the years to follow were hard, I have also faced many challenges in my professional career. I have struggled with accepting grief and how it holds a spot in my day-to-day life, bad bosses, navigating clients of all personality types, construction delays, personal learning curves, and many mistakes that taught me many lessons.
As you know, we’re big fans of Studio 1950. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Studio 1950 is an Interior Design firm based out of Nashville, TN but doing business worldwide. We specialize in designing the interiors of custom homes, renovations, and additions. Studio 1950 received its name as a tribute to my father who was born in 1950. We pride ourselves on creating spaces that provoke emotions through color, texture, and lighting. The spaces we create hold a very special place in our heart as we understand the importance of creating spaces for timeless moments.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is being in Washington DC with my family and getting caught in a rainstorm in the middle of the city. We had the best time adventuring in the rain and laughing together.
