Today we’d like to introduce you to Reginald Masters.
Hi Reginald, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Houston, TX but raised in a small town in East Texas named Crockett, TX. After graduating from Crockett High School at the age of 17, I moved on from Crockett to attend one semester at Prairie View A&M University and transferred after one semester to Sam Houston State University, where I graduated in 2002 with a BBA in General Business Administration.
After college, I moved to Houston without any professional connections and landed my first job out of college by printing around 100 resumes, put on a suit & tie everyday, and went building to building, passing out my resume. I walked into a company named IMX, Inc., and a man by the name of Greg Austin gave me my first opportunity as a broker sales representative for IMX, Inc., a mortgage technology company for mortgage brokers. I was successful in the position and Greg landed a high-level position at Aurora Loan Service, a Lehman Brothers company, and took me along with him as an AVP of Sales Support in Dallas, TX. At Aurora Loan Services, I was able to learn the mortgage business from a high level in the areas of origination, underwriting, processing, and closing loans. I moved on from ALS and held other positions in the mortgage industry to increase my knowledge in loan origination, underwriting, and processing.
The financial crisis of 2007-2008 forced me to find a new career in technology sales in 2008. I worked in IT sales for several years but reentered the mortgage business in 2011 as a mortgage processor, being quickly promoted to a processing manager leveraging my mortgage knowledge pre-financial crisis.
I had always had significant mortgage knowledge after being successful in my mortgage positions early in my career, but I didn’t initially focus on starting a mortgage company. I had launched several companies prior to launching Masters Home Mortgage, which were great learning experiences. Every job and every business I tried all prepared me for rising to the challenge of making Masters Home Mortgage a success.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a rough and lonely road. I have always had to adjust with the odds stacked against me. Being the first to graduate from college in my immediate family, I never really had a real mentor during my time in school. That I could call for advice, figuring out things through trial and error can sometimes be hard and costly lessons. I always felt insecure in jobs as I could always sense a layoff around the corner. This insecurity was one of the reasons I always attempted to be an entrepreneur, as I knew I wouldn’t lay myself off. It takes having a very strong will to fail multiple times and get back up and try again.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Masters Home Mortgage?
Masters Home Mortgage is a mortgage company with offices in Atlanta and Houston. We handle the purchase and refinance mortgages in Texas and Georgia with the ability to get loans closed quickly and efficiently. We have loans programs for people looking to refinance their existing mortgage to better terms, loans for first-time homebuyers, and loans for buyers looking to upgrade or downgrade from their existing homes. We also have programs for investors or people looking to purchase a second home.
With Masters Home Mortgage being a smaller mortgage company, we can many times offer better rates and more comprehensive service as we don’t have to work through multiple layers of management and staff to get loans closed. As a company and team, we take pride in being able to provide competent mortgage advice.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For individuals that are just starting out, try to focus and master one business at a time. Sometimes being a jack of all trades and a master of nothing will yield less money and less time for yourself and family. Make sure the things you put the effort in align with your God given gift and purpose.
