Robert Dumas: My Journey to TaxConnex
Hi, I’m Robert Dumas, CEO and founder of TaxConnex. Our journey began in 2006, and since 2009, we’ve been dedicated to helping clients navigate sales and use tax compliance.
I started my career in public accounting but quickly realized it wasn’t for me. After working in corporate tax and feeling stuck, I took a leap and started consulting—doing whatever I could to support my family. That’s when an opportunity in sales tax came my way. Though I had no prior experience, I took on a 50-state taxability study and found myself diving deep into the complexities of sales tax compliance.
This led me to a role as COO at a small sales tax outsourcing company, which ultimately inspired me to start my own firm—Tax Partners. Over seven years, we grew it into a $16M business before selling it in 2005. But I wasn’t done yet. After my non-compete expired, former clients started reaching out, and I found myself back in the game—this time with a vision to build something better.
TaxConnex was born from the realization that sales tax compliance isn’t just about technology—it’s about service. Our competitors rely on one-size-fits-all software, but we take a hands-on, customized approach. We combine expert practitioners with the right tools to deliver white-glove service, ensuring our clients get the personalized support they need.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. My path to TaxConnex was anything but linear. I started in public accounting, quickly realized it wasn’t for me, and moved into corporate—but I wasn’t advancing as fast as I wanted. So, I left without a clear plan, just knowing I wanted to work for myself.
At first, I took on any consulting work I could find to support my family. One gig led me to a sales tax project, which I knew nothing about at the time, but I figured it out. That opportunity eventually landed me a COO role at a small firm. It was a great learning experience but ultimately didn’t work out. That’s when I saw an opening in the market and co-founded Tax Partners.
We built Tax Partners into a $16M company before selling in 2005. But that journey taught me something important—technology alone wasn’t the answer to sales tax compliance. When I started getting calls from old clients asking for help again, I knew I wanted to do things differently. I wanted a more customized, service-driven approach, not just another software solution.
That’s how TaxConnex was born. Scaling it hasn’t been easy. Maintaining our high standards as we grow is a constant challenge, but we stick to our core values. Hiring the right people who align with those values has been key.
At the end of the day, I love solving problems and making a real impact. That’s what keeps me going.
