Today we’d like to introduce you to Roshi Day.
Hi Roshi, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I became The Pretty Hustler right after cosmetology school; where I got my associates in salon management. It was that name that got me through several doors as a beauty professional. People wouldn’t even call me by my name; I was simply The Pretty Hustler. I had a great 14 year run in hair, makeup, and lashes before settling into esthetics. After studying to get my Master Herbalist certification I became interested in cannabis. The pandemic made it easy to pivot to a new arena. It had so many great benefits as fair as skincare and your overall mental health. I wanted to be a part of that movement. For years cannabis was seen as the big bad wolf; now it’s one of the most used herbs in the industry.
My dispensary is focused on natural, organic products that actually work. The goal is to give people safe options they can count on.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, it’s been quite the journey being a Mama, entrepreneur, & a woman in a male dominated industry. They don’t always take you as serious but the reward is seeing the products work for them. Every business owner has growing pains learning how to manage your day to day, contract employees, funding, and scaling growth. The key is to take it slow and never stop being a student. My most humbling experience was being an assistant. I learned a lot about what I did and didn’t want to do as a leader. I have great patience so I’m always seeing the glass half full because it could always be worse than it appears in real time. The scars are what teach you. The experience. Pivoting during the pandemic was a challenge because not only are you starting something new but you’re also doing it during a time where things are uncertain. My viewpoint was that it was just like life on any other day. Life is uncertain everyday. This was just a good excuse to jump.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Pretty Cush + Cush Dispensary is a business that specializes in cannabis beauty, skincare, & lifestyle. Our specialty is handcrafted (cbd) cannabis products. We make everything in small batches to ensure quality. We are known for making our luxury items from scratch. Our dispensary has a Southern vibe in terms of our recipes and fragrances. Many times you see people approach having a dispensary on a large scale; but we want to stay intimate. Our ingredients are always natural and organic.
We are available online and in person in the south. Brand wise I’m proud of the fact that I’m a woman thriving in a male dominated industry in the south. I was able to pivot in a pandemic to something I love. The most important thing to know is I take my time making each and every product. Most of our orders are custom and made to order. Intention is put into everything I do. My goal is to have a safe space for people to learn more about cbd and cannabis as a whole. Our brand is a lifestyle that you can use everyday. Most of our products are essential to your daily life.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’ve been free-falling all my life. Pivoting during the pandemic was a major risk because it was something that was new to me. I knew I wanted to move into the natural way of things. I could have stuck with my usual but my instinct was telling me that it was time for something new. Finding substitutes for everything and making it luxury was a task. Luxury is a state of mind and based largely on time spent as well as ingredients. It’s also risky because even though cbd is popular it’s still new to many people. Explaining the benefits and the fact that it’s safe can turn into debates. Having the facts made that easier for us. You come to realize it’s a lot of people who just don’t know. Some are willing to learn and others not so much but it’s still worth a try. In the south cannabis is not something given free range so you have to get creative and intentional.
Because it’s still a little taboo you have to be on top of your knowledge and skill. There are lots of stereotypes for people who use cannabis.
Getting into business is always a risk because you just never know. Niche business is even more of an adventure because you’re one of the pioneers in the game. I think risks are needed in any entrepreneur’s life. If you never take any risks; the business never gets started. Lots of things happen by chance but most of it is weaved along with what we experienced. Risks teach you to be brave. Bravery is something you need out here.
