Today we’d like to introduce you to Rudolph H Carn
Hi Rudolph H, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began as a vision to address a significant gap in healthcare services tailored to the unique needs of Black gay men. The inception of the Carl Bean Men’s Health and Wellness Center was born from my years of experience leading NAESM and a deep understanding of the healthcare disparities affecting the Black LGBTQ+ community.
The idea for the Center crystallized over a decade of planning and preparation. It was during my tenure as CEO of NAESM that I recognized the pressing need for a dedicated facility where Black gay men could access high-quality, culturally competent medical services without fear of judgment or discrimination. This realization was the catalyst for establishing the Men’s Health and Wellness Center in 2018, a place conceived to be more than just a clinic but a sanctuary for health and empowerment.
With the collaboration of dedicated professionals like Dr. Jamaal Clue, we launched the Center in Atlanta, a city known for its significant Black LGBTQ+ population but also its public health challenges, particularly in the areas of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Since its inception, the Center has evolved from a concept into a fully operational health facility offering a wide range of services from general healthcare to specialized treatments for STDs and comprehensive support for HIV prevention and care.
The path was not without challenges. Transitioning from the initial setup phase to a full-fledged operation required navigating bureaucratic hurdles, securing sustainable funding, and building a competent team committed to our mission. Despite these obstacles, our focus remained steadfast on providing exceptional care and expanding our services to meet the growing needs of our community.
Today, as the founder and a proactive board member, I continue to guide the Center toward new opportunities for growth and impact. My role involves overseeing the organization and actively engaging in community outreach, advocacy, and strategic planning to ensure that the Center remains a pivotal resource for our clients and a beacon of hope and health in the community.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has certainly not been a smooth road. Establishing and maintaining a health center dedicated to the needs of Black gay men came with its set of unique challenges and struggles.
Funding: One of the primary hurdles was securing sustainable funding. The health disparities faced by Black gay men are profound, yet funding did not always align with the urgent needs. Convincing funders of the critical nature of our work required persistent advocacy and demonstrating the tangible impacts of our services.
Stigma and Discrimination: Another significant challenge was overcoming the stigma and discrimination associated with our target population. This affected our ability to provide services and our client’s willingness to seek care. We had to work tirelessly to build trust within the community, reassuring them that our center is a safe space that respects their identity and addresses their health concerns without judgment.
Staffing: Another struggle was recruiting and retaining skilled, culturally competent, and sensitive staff who were sensitive to our client’s specific needs. It was crucial that our team not only possess the necessary medical expertise but also a deep understanding of the social nuances affecting Black gay men.
Regulatory Compliance: Navigating the complex healthcare regulations and ensuring compliance added another layer of complexity and as a health service provider, staying abreast of changes in healthcare laws and managing the administrative aspects of running a clinic required constant vigilance and adaptability.
Despite these challenges, the journey has been enriching. Overcoming these obstacles has strengthened our resolve and reaffirmed our commitment to our mission. The positive feedback from our community and the visible improvements in our client’s health are constant reminders of the importance and impact of our work.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, success is defined by the positive impact we make on individuals’ lives and the broader community. It goes beyond the operational achievements of Carl Bean Men’s Health and Wellness Center. True success is measured by our ability to empower Black gay men to take control of their health and well-being in an environment that respects and understands their unique experiences.
Our success is not just about the changes we see in our clients—it’s about the transformations. It’s about the increase in their health literacy, the significant improvement in their health outcomes, and their sustained engagement with our services. Success is also about witnessing a profound decrease in stigma within the community and a substantial increase in supportive conversations about health and wellness among Black gay men
.
Furthermore, our success is a reflection of our team’s growth and development. It’s about how each member handles challenges and innovates solutions tailored to our community’s needs. Regardless of their role, every individual on our team is a key player in this. Their professional and personal growth is not just a part of our success, it significantly contributes to our collective success.
Finally, success is sustainable. It’s about building a framework where the health center continues to thrive, expand its services, and adapt to new health challenges and scientific advancements, ensuring long-term support for our community long after I am gone.
