Inspiring Conversations with Sadie Burbank of Space By Sadie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sadie Burbank

Hi Sadie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Space By Sadie was officially established three years ago, but the soul of my business has developed over a lifetime. When I was a young child I learned about my grandfather running his own residential interior design firm and not too far from the tree, my father starting his own hospitality firm, Design Continuum Inc (DCI). My mother was born and raised on the westside of Atlanta, GA where she worked in the world of interiors specializing in Danish goods and Poggenpohl kitchen design. I knew that I wanted to carry on the family legacy and I believed that I had inherited a keen eye for design.

After graduating from the Lamar Dodd School of Art in Athens, GA with a degree in textile design, I moved to Los Angeles, CA where I got the incredible experience to work for one of my idols – Kelly Wearstler. I was completely engulfed in the the intricacies of furniture production, tight deadlines and luxury clientele. The ability to make spatial decisions and exercise creative control established a new found confidence from which I learned immensely.

In 2019 I returned to my hometown of Atlanta and decided what the heck – I could try this on my own! I remember so many friends, family or people I just met asking me for advice: Where should I hang this? What do you think of this color? Any space that I enter I am constantly thinking of ways to shift the layout or change textures to create a fresh perspective and relax the mind. I truly enjoy collaborating with my clients, making the design process more affordable, and ultimately making people smile.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has most definitely been windy with many ups and downs along the way. Like the journey of life some might say! In the words of Arthur Ashe, “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.” We do not always value creatives with income or social praise in our society, but we should. The journey of a small business owner quickly teaches you to know your worth and to be confident in the services you offer that are unique to you.

One must also realize that failure is part of the process. I can’t believe that I get to do my favorite things everyday and work with such wonderful people. I am grateful that I get to share my work with you and I am honored to be featured in so many publications around Atlanta. Word of mouth is the most powerful tool in business, so I thank you for lifting up creatives like myself everyday.

As you know, we’re big fans of Space By Sadie. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Whether you are looking for interior design advice or preparing your home for display, Space By Sadie is here to eliminate the stress of it all. I specialize in residential spaces with the goal of enhancing everyday life by reflecting personal style and providing a minimal design aesthetic that is functional and affordable. From curating vintage pieces to selecting paint colors, quality furniture and décor pieces, it can be freeing to refresh your home and redefine yourself!

Known for designing spaces that flow well to create an open and airy atmosphere, I also offer minimally invasive staging services to not only stay within budget but to repurpose items already in the home. My primary territory for in person design consultations is Atlanta, GA. Additionally, I offer virtual services across the US. For bookings and inquires, please visit spacebysadie.com.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Being kind to others, traveling the world, absorbing my surroundings and celebrating creativity at every turn. A foundation of true grit along with the desire to learn about a world influenced by the history of design comes from my family, the people who matter most. I would also like to give admiration to two small business owners and very close friends, Kristin Fedyk of Inland Venice (inlandvenice.com) and Alberto Hernandez of Meshika Hats (meshikahats.com). I met these unique trailblazers in Los Angeles decades ago and ever since they have encouraged me to be 100% myself while both exhibiting a hell of a journey to small business success.
