Inspiring Conversations with Shay Agboola of Hoops 365/OcYM

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shay Agboola.

Shay Agboola

Hi Shay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Being a former basketball alumni of Gwinnett County, I wanted to bring our community together to have a reunion of sorts without the formality of a school reunion. Also, I wanted to bring basketball, especially the summer basketball aspect down to Georgia. As a native New Yorker, summer basketball is the biggest event we look forward to every year and I wanted to have something my community can look forward to each year.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Between getting venues, getting the teams together, and raising funds for this event, nothing comes easy with running a high-level basketball tournament. Commitment on both ends (mine and the teams) is probably the biggest struggle but once the teams commit, the tournament makes itself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My partners and I run a business where we use basketball to show people that anything is possible. We try to use basketball as a tool to show that you can do anything you put your mind to and you can Overcome Your Mental, OcYM. We use our platform as a voice and tool for guys who want to continue to play basketball at a high level and need guidance in doing so.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My best advice is don’t panic. People sometimes have a certain vision in mind and when it doesn’t work out, they want to scrap it all. Plenty of times I wanted to cancel my own event but in the end, I kept it cool and level-headed and made sure I had the best event my community has ever seen. God has a vision for all of us so sometimes when things don’t go your way or isn’t moving in the timely fashion you’d like, just know God is going to make things happen when you are ready and when he thinks you’re ready.
