Inspiring Conversations with Shikha Thapa of Melting Moments by Shikha

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shikha Thapa.

Hi Shikha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Thanks for having me here.

About me, I am a self-taught cake artist. I am blessed with a loving husband and two wonderful boys. I have always been an adventurous and creative person, and my artistic talents include painting, sculpting, writing poetry (which got published in a local newspaper when I was young), interior decoration, fashion designing, woodwork, and of course, baking. I enjoy baking cakes, cookies, pies, and any thing that can be baked “lol”.

I often baked cakes for my family and friends, and I loved creating something new and unique every time. I remember my very first cake, I made a 3D McQueen car cake for my son’s 3rd birthday, which turned out pretty good for a beginner. The cake was a hit among my son and guests, who encouraged me to start my own baking business. I was a little hesitant to take their requests seriously until a friend asked me to bake a cake for her daughter and even before I agreed ,she paid me for it. This event marked the beginning of my baking career. I continue to be grateful to her to trust me and get me started.

Meanwhile I moved to Atlanta and was little hesitant to start over again, but I continued baking for family and friends . It was my friend’s birthday and me and my another friend was meeting her in the evening when she asked me if I can bake a cake for her in a very short notice to surprise her and of course I did. I painted her face on the cake. The birthday girl was so thrilled and loved it so much that she insisted me to start my own home bakery and even paid me.I started Melting Moments by Shikha that night. I am blessed to have friends who support you . Since then, there’s no looking back.

I love baking, and I can spend hours creating edible masterpieces. I specialize in hand-painted cakes,3-D cakes , sugar models, chocolate sculptures, and many other unique technique and intricate designs. I am thrilled to bring smiles to my clients faces and make their special occasions even more memorable.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am a self-taught cake artist. My love for painting, sculpting, colors, cooking, and creativity has been a help in disguise in my profession.

Being a quick learner helped me to acquire new techniques and learn all the elements in a short duration but still it took quiet a trial and error, hard work, research, patience, dedication, late nights, eye for detail and commitment to figure out all the elements and medium and master my skills to perfection to provide outstanding detailings and Quality to my clients.

When we talk of home-based business, it doesn’t get any easy because you work from home. Taking care of the family and your business together is challenging at times with lots of orders hauling during the weekend, you are there at home but unavailable to spend time with family and working towards that amazing masterpieces from scratch to create for your client, leaves some serious clean up and aching back and sore legs every time.

How do you define success?
Success doesn’t come only by luck. To be successful, you need to be passionate about your work… you need to love what you do. Patience, hard work, preservance and not only desire to learn but also the ability to implement leads you to success.

Success is when you witness that big smile on a client’s face and they bestow you with all love and appreciate your hard work, time and skills. When they are your clients from day one and still are. When clients feel the need to travel 30-40 miles to get cake only from you. You feel rewarded and that matters.

Most of my clients know my work by word of mouth for finesse, quality and flavours… I am thankful and grateful to all my clients for trusting me always.

Having the support of your family and friends is the most crucial part of being successful. It wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering support and motivation of my husband ,children, sister ,parents and friends. They are the biggest support in my life because of them, I stand here tall and proud today.
