Inspiring Conversations with Suzanne Robb of Alloy Personal Training

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Robb

Hi Suzanne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My journey to my current position, co-founder and COO of Alloy Personal Training, began 31 years ago when I started training with Rick Mayo. Rick owned a personal training gym near my house and I began training there 3 times a week and quickly got into the best shape of my life. The gym and community there became an important place for me and Rick and I became good friends over the years. Fast forward to 2010, Rick was looking for someone to assist him with his speaker events, organizing travel and for an idea to launch a new business based on his very successful gym. I knew nothing about the gym business but I am very good at organizing and business operations. I went to work part-time for Rick and we began licensing the business systems that Rick had developed at his studio. With his vision and my implementation skills, we grew what became known as Alloy Personal Training Solutions to an international brand, helping over 2500 gyms all over the world. I officially became Rick’s business partner in 2014 when I bought an equity stake in the company. In 2019 we decided it was time to franchise our business, Alloy Personal Training, so that we could help more people and have more control over our brand than licensing allowed. Of course, our timing didn’t seem very good since Covid hit in March of 2020 and virtually all fitness franchise sales came to a screeching halt. We steadied on and in the spring of 2021 the world was recovering and sales picked up. Today, Alloy Personal Training has awarded 314 franchises across 33 states and has opened 84 studios so far. Today I lead a team of 12 staff at head quarters, who are dedicated to supporting our franchisees and the future is very bright! I would have never thought all those years ago when I walked into my community gym how much it would change my life!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In general, I’d say that the journey has been smooth. Sure we’ve made some mistakes along the way but we learn from them and keep going. Covid definitely slowed our projected growth but there was nothing that we could do about that other than regroup and push on. In fact, our first franchisee opened in North Carolina in June of 2020 during the height of the shutdown! My partner and I are well matched in that our skillsets align very well and we are clear about our roles. We have huge respect and trust for one another and have created an awesome culture at Alloy.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Alloy Personal Training is a franchise business that specializes in small group personal training. The business model is simple…a typical studio is 1500 square feet, equipped with functional strength training tools, two full-time and one or two part-time coaches. We offer two monthly memberships… 2 times or 3 times per week. We are a premium brand and attract wealthier clients who tend to be a bit older, 45-65. This is very underserved market, especially in fitness. We deliver a safe, highly effective and personally designed workout for each member every day. The nature of small group training drives community and accountability. Members often say that they started to get into shape or lose weight but they stay for the community. Our technology, scientific programming and advanced evaluation systems are designed to get our members into the best shape of their lives, enabling them to look good, feel great and live life to the fullest.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe fitness will continue to grow as we live longer and want to be healthier. We stay away from trendy and stick with the tried and true. I believe that AI will enable us to serve and support our franchisees in a more efficient and beneficial manner while still maintaining a personal touch.
