Today we’d like to introduce you to Syleecia Thompson.
Hi Syleecia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey has been a road paved of resilience, Born on Christmas Day. I guess you can say I entered this world in an unpredictable way. I was a gift to my parents. I was born December 25, 1972, around six p.m. in Harvey, Illinois (a suburb outside of Chicago). My mother loves to tell the story of me interrupting her Christmas dinner. I went to Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. College was an incredible experience for me. Later, I went on to get my MBA and Doctorate degree in Business. My sister Syleena signed her first record deal in 1998 with Jive Records under the stage name of Syleena Johnson. She recorded her first album and three years later, it was released in 2001. Syleena’s first tour was the TP2.com tour with R. Kelly in 2001, and I joined her as her road manager and that was when I experienced my first taste of entertainment. Eventually, I went on to become her manager and tour the world. Currently, we work in music, film and television. I am her business partner and business partner of James DuBose for DuBose Entertainment. I love what I do.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
NO, it’s been a road paved of loss, lessons, and love! But I wouldn’t change it. I have learned many lessons that shaped me. Most of the struggles are because I am a woman in a male-dominated field. There were also many personal challenges I faced alongside these professional challenges. I am a breast cancer survivor and experienced a stillbirth. Stress management and taking care of yourself in this business is critical to survival.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I call myself a Serial Entrepreneur and Educator. I am the author of the Amazon Best-Selling book, The Resilience Factor. I am an Entrepreneur, Educator and Entertainment Executive. I recently appeared on TV One’s new series, Life Therapy with AJ Johnson. That was a life changing experience. My clients have appeared on FOX Soul BET, Aspire, TV One, Essence, Sony/RCA/Jive, ABC, CBS, Marriage Boot Camp on VH1, Sister Circle and more. With my talent and vision, I plan on taking the music, tv and film industries by storm through my dedication and passion. Some of my prior projects include Fox Soul Christmas Special, Fox Soul Mother’s Day Special, The Making of a Woman docuseries and concert, BET and aspireTV film, Couples Therapy and CLEO TV’s digital series, The Startup and TV One original programming, One Stage to the Next. As an educator for more than 20 years, I have taught and coached more than 10,000 students globally. I am also a full-time professor at National University and I teach graduate-level entrepreneurship courses.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Music, television and film are industries that are growing tremendously. There are shifts, changes and content is KING and QUEEN. I plan on being an intricate part of this shift.
