Inspiring Conversations with Tai Cochran of HER PM

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tai Cochran.

Hi Tai, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child, I knew I wanted to have my own business. I didn’t know what that meant or how to make it happen. I searched for the meaning through advanced post-secondary education. In 2019, I decided the technology world within corporate America didn’t fit the vision I had for my career. I was tired of having to prove my worth (plus more) every time I walked into the room. I just needed to regroup, and I did just that. I spent the remainder of 2019 creating a tighter bond with my children and preparing my business plan for active status in the first quarter of 2020. 2020 came, and I was ready to hit the pavement running, but COVID-19. On top of that, I was facing a divorce. Could this really be life? Would I have to go back to the regular 9 to 5 monotony? Absolutely not! I turned down opportunities with Fortune 500 companies because I believed in myself. I went back to the drawing board. Spent hours networking virtually and talking with potential clients about their project management needs. I became laser-focused on who I could help and how to service them. That is how HER PM was born.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Any entrepreneur that says their road has been easy is lying. My road to entrepreneurship hasn’t been easy. In fact, it continues to offer challenges. It is about your ability to remain agile and navigate the wheel when you experience roadblocks. For me, the struggles were more internal than external. Don’t get me wrong; I’ve had to push past haters that tried to belittle my successes. However, the struggles started with me. I’ve had to push past the effects of imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and even the fear of my success has plagued me. Thanks be to God because here I am today as my authentic self, thriving.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
HER PM is a women-owned and women-led project management consulting firm. Although we partner with men to complete their projects, we primarily partner with women executives and business owners to implement multi-million-dollar projects. We pride ourselves on High-Quality Execution and Results (See what we did there). Our highly skilled project managers can deliver a broad cross-section of projects utilizing our Flawless Execution process.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I’m an eastern NC small-town girl with equal amounts of shyness and rebellion. You couldn’t tell it now, but I was a complete tomboy; playing sports and enjoying the great outdoors with my friends and cousins always gave me a sense of freedom. Higher education is very important in my family, so I’ve always loved reading and learning. Some may say I was competitive, but I prefer to say determined with a sprinkle of passion!
