Inspiring Conversations with Tammy Gormley of Timber & Suede Design

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Gormley.  She shares her story of how her business started and has grown over the past six years below:

Tammy Gormley

It’s crazy to believe that my friend Shelley and I discussed our passion for interior design and often talked about starting our own business, but we never thought it would become much. In late 2018, we decided to put ourselves out there and see where it would lead us. Just a few months later, Timber & Suede Decorating, LLC. was launched. The company quickly gained traction with various projects and word-of-mouth referrals, which kept us much busier than we originally anticipated.

Unfortunately, in late 2019, Shelley moved to Tampa, Florida. Although she left the Atlanta-based business, she continues to thrive in the design world. I quickly realized that I was more interested in remodeling and hardscapes. I began expanding my network, bringing in skilled contractors, local businesses, and reliable suppliers.

With this strengthened team, I changed the company’s direction to focus more on design and remodeling. As a result, Timber & Suede Design (TSD) was born.  We started with kitchen and bathroom remodels, gradually expanding our services to include complete home renovations and exterior projects.  TSD’s success and growth have been fueled by the support of our clients and community, for which we are truly grateful. Each project we undertake is a testament to our dedication to superior quality and client satisfaction.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

In this business, smooth sailing is rare, and every project brings its own set of challenges. Clients come to TSD looking for my team and me to help make their dreams become a reality. However, the realism of construction often differs from what is seen on TV. For example, unexpected issues and delays occur during a renovation, and having people in your home for an extended period can be stressful.

Given these uncertainties, my top priority is keeping the client informed. Knowing that they trust us with their homes and hard-earned money, it’s imperative to keep communication clear and compelling. As a designer and project manager, it’s my job to be there for them every step of the way. Despite the ups and downs, seeing the joy on clients’ faces when they see their transformed space makes it all worthwhile.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

TSD started as a passion project that has evolved into a thriving design and remodeling business.  TSD has been fortunate enough to rely on word-of-mouth referrals rather than traditional advertising.

What truly sets TSD apart is the deep connections that we develop with our clients. Many of them have become not just customers but valued friends who return for additional projects and/or recommend us to others. At TSD, we prioritize listening attentively to the client’s needs and preferences, guiding them through the design process with a focus on practicality and affordability.

While staying informed about current trends, I also strive to push the boundaries a bit, encouraging the clients to explore new ideas while staying within their budget. My approach is a partnership rather than imposition, as I respect the client’s vision and treat their budget like mine.

Ultimately, the driving force is the satisfaction and happiness of the client. It’s not just about completing projects; it’s about creating spaces that bring joy and fulfillment to their lives. That’s what truly motivates me and sets TSD apart in this industry.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?

Authenticity is the cornerstone of my approach. I firmly believe in staying true to myself, embracing transparency, and maintaining unwavering honesty in all my interactions. Balancing professionalism with genuine enjoyment is critical to achieving meaningful connections and attaining success. Most importantly, the loyalty, relationships, and partnerships I have developed with my team of local contractors and supplies are invaluable.
