Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Lawrence
Hi Tiffany , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I never planned to become a doula—this work found me. Nearly 13 years ago, as a single mom of three, juggling college and life, Chanel of Ancient Song introduced me to birth work, and it just clicked.
I started small, supporting families one-on-one, but my passion grew, leading me to create Motherly Touch Childbirth Services, where I provide doula support, childbirth education, and lactation consulting. Over the years, I’ve expanded—traveling to teach, developing research-backed courses, and now assisting at a birthing center.
Balancing motherhood, business, and homeschooling hasn’t been easy, but this work is life-saving, especially for Black and Brown women. Whether through classes, apparel, or advocacy, my mission remains the same: helping families thrive, not just survive.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not—it’s been a road full of twists, turns, and the occasional pothole. Balancing single motherhood, entrepreneurship, and homeschooling hasn’t been easy, but I’ve kept pushing because I know this work matters.
One of the biggest challenges has been fighting for visibility and respect in birth spaces, especially as a Black woman advocating for Black and Brown families. The birth world still has gatekeeping, and breaking through those barriers hasn’t always been smooth.
But through it all, I’ve remained resilient, finding ways to adapt, grow, and keep serving families. Every challenge has only fueled my passion more because this work isn’t just a job—it’s life-saving for the communities I serve.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m the founder of Motherly Touch Childbirth Services, where I provide full-spectrum doula support, childbirth and lactation education, and advocacy for Black and Brown families. I specialize in holistic, culturally competent care, making sure parents feel empowered, informed, and supported throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
What sets me apart? Experience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to my community. With nearly 13 years in birth work, I’ve served families across states and even internationally, offering both in-person and virtual support. I also develop comprehensive, research-backed courses on lactation, new parent education, and postpartum sex education, ensuring families and birth workers have the tools they need to succeed.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of my dedication to representation—my courses, classes, and materials reflect Black and Brown families, ensuring they see themselves in the education they receive. I’ve also built a birth worker apparel line, giving doulas, midwives, and lactation consultants a way to show up proudly in their field.
At the core of my brand is this: Black and Brown families deserve better birth outcomes, and I’m here to make sure they get the support, education, and advocacy they need. Whether through classes, one-on-one care, or resources, my mission is to help families thrive, not just survive.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe risk-taking is necessary for growth, and honestly, risk is the theme of my life. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I played it safe.
One of my biggest risks was leaving stability behind to go all in on birth work. It wasn’t just about starting a business—it was about trusting that my passion and skills could sustain me and my family. Another major risk? Packing up my life and relocating to Alabama to step into a midwife assistant role. It was a leap of faith, but it aligned with my vision, and I trusted that the right doors would open.
I see risk as a mix of preparation and trust—knowing when to jump and believing in your ability to figure things out along the way. Every risk I’ve taken has led to growth, new opportunities, and deeper impact. So, if you’re on the fence about a decision, my advice? Bet on yourself. The biggest rewards often come from the boldest moves.
