Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, there have been difficulties along the way, but overall, the experience has been enjoyable. The most difficult task, in the beginning, was just to keep the company afloat until it started to acquire traction in the neighborhood. Being a native Atlantan, I am well aware of the tendency of the city’s residents to stay inside during inclement weather, making developing a steady customer during those times quite difficult.

To get through those difficult times, one needed perseverance, ingenuity, and a thorough comprehension of the local way of life. Furthermore, given my expertise in finance, entering the world of restaurant management was a significant move for me. I had to quickly adjust and incorporate my natural hospitality while learning the nuances of the restaurant industry.

Though it brought its own set of difficulties, juggling the restaurant’s operational responsibilities with my financial expertise allowed me to contribute a distinct viewpoint that improved our customers’ eating experiences. Hiring and retaining qualified employees is one of the industry’s ongoing problems.

The ability to guide and assist my team in achieving their goals on the personal, financial, and professional fronts gives me great gratification, despite the inherent challenges. It is so fulfilling to see them flourish, and it strengthens my resolve to provide a supportive and encouraging work environment.

As you know, we’re big fans of J.R. Crickets-Cascade and South Cobb. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
It’s not all about the wings! J.R. Crickets has been Atlanta’s go-to “wing sanity” for more than 40 years! The customer favorites are HOT, Lemon Pepper, and Sweetheat. However, most of our customers are pleasantly surprised by our unique take on a sweetheat/lemon pepper blend at our Cascade Road and South Cobb locations.

We have an entire menu full of delectable options. Including our fall-off-the-bone ribs, luscious crab legs, and shellfish, or sink your teeth into our version of the Steak n Cheese Philly sandwiches. We make you feel right at home with wall-to-wall televisions to catch all the big games, a cozy patio for those sunny days, and a fully stocked bar to quench your thirst. Hungry but in a hurry? Our locations offer fast and friendly service, with convenient “To-Go” options so you can enjoy our delicious eats on the fly.

When the weather’s warm, join us for our bi-weekly outdoor concert series, where you can groove to live music while you enjoy your favorite wings. And if you’re feeling brave, unleash your inner rockstar at our Friday night karaoke – it’s a vibe you won’t want to miss! So whether you’re craving wings, seeking out some savory seafood, or just looking for a good time, J.R. Crickets is the place to be!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is that success is a team effort – you simply cannot do it alone. Surrounding yourself with good help, and I mean truly exceptional individuals, is crucial. These are the folks who not only bring their skills to the table but also share your passion and dedication to the business. Finding ways to motivate and inspire your staff is key, and nurturing an environment where they can thrive and enjoy their work is important.

It’s not just about having warm bodies on the floor; it’s about cultivating a team that’s invested in the success and life of the business. I have also come to realize that we are not just in the food service industry – we are in the hospitality industry. It is not merely about serving meals; it’s about creating memorable experiences and forging genuine connections with our customers.

Our philosophy must always be centered around the mantra, ‘The answer is YES, now what’s the question?’ This mindset breeds a culture of positivity, flexibility, and a relentless commitment to customer satisfaction. Whether it’s accommodating special requests, going the extra mile to ensure guest comfort, or simply greeting everyone with a warm smile, every interaction is an opportunity to elevate the customer experience and leave a lasting impression.

Success in the hospitality sector depends on the level of excellence we provide when it comes to servicing our customers. Prioritizing teamwork, fostering a culture of hospitality, and embracing a ‘yes-first’ approach, we not only elevate our business but also enrich the lives of those we serve. These principles have been instrumental in shaping our journey at J.R. Crickets and continue to guide us as we strive for excellence in everything we do.
