Today we’d like to introduce you to Zulna L. Heriscar
Hi Zulna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Zulna L. Heriscar, the local owner of Mathnasium in Fayetteville, is an accomplished tech sales leader with over 20 years of executive experience at Microsoft. A first-generation immigrant, Heriscar was deeply inspired by her late mother, Marie Rose Paul-Herisca, a passionate advocate for education from Haiti.
Following her mother’s passing in 2022, Heriscar sought to make a meaningful impact, leading her to open a Mathnasium Learning Center as a tribute to her mother’s legacy and a way to support the community. In 2005, Heriscar and her mother established a scholarship in partnership with The George Snow Foundation, which has awarded over 20 scholarships to deserving youth. The scholarship was renamed in her mother’s honor in 2022, reflecting Heriscar’s ongoing commitment to advancing educational opportunities in her community.
“We’re excited to give back to our community and help students succeed throughout the school year,” said Heriscar. “Our center is a wonderful place for kids to discover how Mathnasium can support their growth and confidence in math. We’re proud to be a resource for families and look forward to making a positive impact in our community.”
Mathnasium Learning Centers specialize in math-only tutoring and are committed to providing the world’s best instruction. The goal: meet students where they are and teach children math in a way that makes sense to them. For decades the Mathnasium Method™ has transformed the way kids learn math — building students’ understanding of math concepts through personalized instruction and an individualized learning plan — all while producing tremendous results, and helping students K-12 achieve their full potential in math and in life.
“At Mathnasium, we’re here to support families every step of the way. We don’t just focus on rote memorization; we teach in a way that truly resonates with kids and fosters deep understanding,” added Heriscar. “I’m looking forward to the open house, where parents can see our approach in action. If your child is having difficulties, our personalized learning plans are designed to help them really grasp concepts and build on them with confidence.”
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Owning a business has definitely not been a smooth road. My journey to owning a Mathnasium franchise was deeply personal and wrapped in honoring my mother, Marie Rose Paul-Herisca’s legacy. I opened the learning center during a season of deep prayer and meditation after going through a period of grief.
The process has been challenging, both emotionally and logistically. However, this center has allowed me to channel my pain into a greater purpose—providing a service that students in my community truly need. Transitioning from personal loss to building something meaningful has been a healing journey, but also one filled with obstacles like balancing business operations, gaining community trust, and navigating the highs and lows of entrepreneurship.
While it hasn’t been easy, every struggle has reinforced the importance of the work we’re doing, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of the students we serve.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mathnasium?

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
There are so many things I love about our city. I especially appreciate the diversity and how amazing the people have been. The community has been incredibly supportive as I’ve embraced the entrepreneurial journey and worked to help students understand, enjoy, and master math. I’ve been fortunate to connect with many small business owners who have welcomed me with open arms and become friends along this journey.
I also love the food, culture, and amenities our city offers. It’s truly a vibrant place to live and work.
One challenge I often encounter, as we continue to innovate and build for the future, is the need for financial assistance for students who would greatly benefit from Mathnasium’s services but cannot afford them. Math touches everything, and in order for us to continue to thrive and innovate as a city, we must embrace math education and ensure that our students are building proficiency. Math isn’t just about numbers—it’s about building the competence needed for the jobs and industries of the future.
I believe there are many companies and donors in our community who share this vision. By partnering with us to sponsor students in need, these organizations can help ensure that every child has the opportunity to develop the critical math skills necessary to succeed in tomorrow’s workforce.
