We recently had the chance to connect with Leron Gaskins and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Leron , thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I wake up around 4:30 – 5:00 am in the morning, I wake up this early to work my business and have a moment of solitude. My first 90 minutes of my day start with a morning prayer/gratitude. Then I go downstairs to make either cup of tea or coffee, while that’s brewing I start my morning stretching. Then when my hot beverage is done, I start my morning journaling. Lastly I work on my business for the remaining of the time before I have to wake up my wife and daughter. Working on my business could look like: editing or creating a podcast episode, building an idea for a video, replying back to emails, creating a newsletter for my supporters.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Leron Gaskins I’m the Author of a workbook called the ‘Digital Release’, a 7-day workbook that help you regain control of your digital devices which is free to download on my website BrokenTraditions.com .And I host the Broken Traditions Podcast and co host the Wins + Lessons podcast. The main focus of the Broken Traditions Podcast is to discuss the problems we have with overconsumption of Digital Devices and what things we can do to solve it. Every week I have a podcast episode discussing this. I realized that this is a problem after reading a book called “Amusing Ourselves To Death” by Neil Postman, he discuss the decline of public discourse because of TV. This book was released in 1985. Now Let’s fast forward to 40 years later in 2025 and the rapid rise of digital overconsumption. I call our addiction to our digital devices “Digital Incarceration”. Ironically our cellphones are called “cells’ and the device is our open air cell that keeps us locked in.
The Wins + Lessons podcast is a podcast that I cohost with my wife. We replace the losses with lessons because we believe there are no loses in life only lessons. This podcast we sit down with a guest to discuss their unique story, or my wife and I have a conversation about something that we fell our audience would like to hear. For example my wife and I had a conversation about using your 9-5 to finance your business.
Both podcast can be found on all streaming platforms.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
This is a great question. I would say me creating social commentary content served it’s purpose and I now have to release it. Doing this kind of content was a great way for me to build my confidence in front of a camera, gave me exposure to some great people. For example I was a guest on Malcolm Jamal Warner’s Podcast called NAH. And he said to me that Broken Traditions was one of his favorite podcast. But now I feel like that kind of content has served it’s purpose, and it’s time to discuss the digital incarceration.
Do you remember a time someone truly listened to you?
The struggle in changing the focus of a brand is real. I used to define my success by views follower and subscribers, but now that number is either static or declining because of the shift in the content. Even though I’m not getting the views that I once did, but now I get something better. Email from one person saying that my content bringing awareness to overconsumption of digital devices changed their behavior. A text message saying that an episode awake something in them. Someone downloading my book the Digital Release
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes. I lean into being my true authentic self whenever I create content. That what makes me, me. I don’t want to be a clone of what is online.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Yes, this was a shift in my mindset to start a new direction of my content. I posted a video that has millions of views tons of reshares even from famous people that I admire. But the post was intellectually empty. It did not serve a purpose of growth . I gained something that most people seek to gain, but I didn’t feel as if I accomplished something. But to go back to the last question, seeing the email that someone downloaded my workbook feels better than seeing over 1 million views on a post.
