Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Dr. Sathya Callender-Wilson of Alpharetta

We recently had the chance to connect with Dr. Sathya Callender-Wilson and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Sathya , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I wake up and begin my day with prayer, setting a positive tone and taking a moment for reflection. After that, I engage in my personal hygiene routine, including brushing my teeth, washing my face, showering, and grooming, which refreshes me and prepares me for the day ahead.

I then get dressed, choosing an outfit that makes me feel comfortable and confident. Following that, I prepare a nutritious breakfast, taking time to cook and enjoy my meal, which fuels my body and mind.

I take a moment to say a positive affirmation that inspires me and reinforces my intentions for the day. Finally, I log into work, checking my emails and reviewing my daily tasks to effectively organize my workload.

This routine helps enhance my productivity and overall well-being for the day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?

Hello, I’m Dr. Sathya Callender-Wilson, the founder and owner of several impactful ventures: Scars of Survival Inc., Scars of Survival Magazine, and PosiPalZ.

Scars of Survival Inc. is dedicated to helping families heal and thrive after experiencing domestic violence. We provide vital resources and support to foster recovery and resilience, enabling individuals to move forward in their lives.

Scars of Survival Magazine serves as a safe space for survivors to share their stories of triumph and inspiration. This platform encourages individuals to shatter the silence surrounding their experiences, empowering them to inspire others through their journeys.

PosiPalZ is an educational brand that helps children learn the values of kindness, love, bravery, joy, friendship, and authenticity. We aim to nurture their emotional intelligence and encourage them to shine and dream while being true to themselves.

I am excited to continue my work with these organizations, each focused on fostering empowerment, healing, and positive growth within our communities. Thank you for taking the time to learn about my journey and the unique missions of my brands!

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
The bonds between people can be broken by various factors, including:

– Betrayal: Trust can be severely damaged through acts of dishonesty or disloyalty, leading to feelings of hurt and anger.
– Miscommunication: Lack of effective communication can result in misunderstandings, causing rifts and assumptions that erode connections.
– Differences in Values or Priorities: Diverging life paths or changing priorities can create distance as individuals may no longer relate to or support each other’s choices.
– Conflict and Resentment: Unresolved conflicts can foster resentment, leading to emotional distance and an unwillingness to engage with one another.
– Neglect: Failing to invest time and effort into maintaining relationships can result in disconnection over time.

Restoring bonds often involves:

– Open Communication: Engaging in honest dialogue to express feelings, share perspectives, and clarify misunderstandings can rebuild trust.
– Empathy and Understanding: Taking the time to understand each other’s experiences and emotions fosters compassion and can heal wounds.
– Forgiveness: Letting go of past grievances allows individuals to move forward, creating space for renewed connection.
– Shared Experiences: Reconnecting through shared activities or creating new memories can reinforce bonds that may have weakened.
– Commitment to Change: Demonstrating a willingness to adapt, compromise, or seek help (such as counseling) signifies dedication to nurturing the relationship.

Ultimately, the restoration of bonds often requires patience, effort, and a mutual desire to rebuild and strengthen the connection.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: “You are enough, just as you are. Embrace your unique journey and trust that every challenge will help you grow into the person you are meant to be.” This reassurance would serve to foster self-acceptance and resilience, encouraging me to navigate life’s ups and downs with confidence and grace.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
In many industries, there are several common misconceptions or “lies” that can perpetuate unrealistic expectations or hinder progress. Here are some of the biggest lies that often circulate:

1. Success Comes Overnight: Many believe that success is achieved quickly and easily, overlooking the hard work, dedication, and persistence required behind the scenes. This myth can lead to disillusionment and frustration when results don’t manifest immediately.

2. Competitiveness Over Collaboration: There’s often a belief that collaboration equals weakness or that one must always be competitive to succeed. However, true progress often comes from collective effort, sharing knowledge, and supporting one another.

3. Perfect Products or Services: The idea that a product or service must be flawless before launch can prevent innovation and growth. In reality, continuous improvement and learning from feedback are key to success.

4. Stability Equals Safety: Some in the industry may cling to the notion that maintaining the status quo is the safest option. However, true growth often requires embracing change and taking calculated risks.

5. Everyone Has it Figured Out: There’s a tendency to project an image of having everything under control, which can create pressure and isolation. In truth, everyone faces challenges and uncertainties, and sharing those struggles can lead to greater connection and support.

Recognizing and addressing these myths can foster a healthier, more realistic perspective within the industry, encouraging innovation, collaboration, and resilience.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
The story I hope people tell about me when I’m gone is one of resilience, compassion, and impact. I want to be remembered as someone who dedicated my life to empowering others, especially survivors of adversity, helping them find their voices and thrive after challenges.

I hope they speak of my commitment to fostering healing and connection within communities, whether through my work with Scars of Survival, the stories shared in Scars of Survival Magazine, or the lessons taught through PosiPalZ.

Ultimately, I want my legacy to reflect that I inspired others to embrace their authentic selves, cultivate kindness, and approach life with courage and joy. I hope to be remembered not just for my achievements, but for the positive change I brought into the lives of others.
