Life and Work with Anna Brady

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Brady.

Anna, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am an Atlanta native. I finished cosmetology school in 2013, and I went to the Aveda Institute here in Atlanta. I graduated on a Friday and started at a Buckhead salon on Saturday!! I now work in a salon in the Cabbagetown neighborhood.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Perseverance and self-motivation is key! One of the biggest struggles starting off is definitely money. As an assistant, you don’t make much, and even once you start taking clients, you have to build your clientele to make good money. Plus, getting out of school you’ve only learned the basics, and you don’t realize how little you know til you’re at a salon. Sometimes you end up working/training for six days a week, and it can be very frustrating… but just stick with it!! The talent and money will follow!!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Mary Todd Hairdressing Company – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a master cosmetologist… but my specialty is hair. I do haircuts, color services, keratin treatments, and facial waxing, for both men and women. I would say I am known for my attention to detail and color work. I do very thorough consultations to make sure I know what a client really wants. I am most proud of my eye for color and use of various techniques I apply to get the results I want. I spend a lot of time learning new ways to do color services as well as haircuts. As a brand/organization I am proud that we all have a high level of attention to detail and hold each other to high standards. Everyone I work with is super passionate, and we take it seriously while making the clients feel comfortable.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well positioned for?
Being in the beauty industry can be great for women. Lots of salons are owned by women so they want to help you grow. Even the men I work with are used to working with women, and I find them to be very progressive and offer lots of equality. Plus, already being somewhat into hair and makeup can make it a little easier as you get into a Hairdressing career.
