Life & Work with Bernard Smith

Hi Bernard, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In Time Percussion has been a dream of mine for over ten years. It started from high school when I became a member of a community drumline named C.R.E.A.M. Percussion. This was an organization that provides a musical outlet in the form of a drumline for the youth in the Atlanta community. This gave many children like me a chance to spend more time perfecting our craft outside of the public school band. I was very prepared to join a college band program by the time I was a senior in high school. After experiencing this, I knew what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to give children the same percussive knowledge that I was able to receive, but even more in-depth and at an earlier age. That’s why I founded In Time Percussion L.L.C. to provide private drum/music lessons for kids and adults that may not have access to band classes or just want to put in more time to learn their craft. In Time Percussion is now a company that provides not only drum lessons but also clinics, seminars, drum camps, master classes, and school presentations! Our motto is: “Making Everyone Better-One Beat At A Time!”

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has not been the smoothest road to success. Getting students, managing students, and keeping students were some of the biggest obstacles along the way. As time went on and we learned from our experiences, these issues became less of a problem. Now we’ve established a system of checks and balances to help hold both the instructor and student accountable for the student’s success.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a professional musician/performer/educator that specializes in drumming. I’m the Captain/Creative Director for the Atlanta Braves Heavy Hitters Drumline. I’ve toured all over America and parts of Asia, performing with the theatrical production known as DrumlineLive, and Universal Studios Japan. I’m also the Assistant Director of The Atlanta Drum Academy. I’m known for being an encouraging, energetic, and positive person. Always putting others before myself and trying to find the good in a bad situation. This is what sets me apart from others. I don’t focus on problems. I find solutions that can best benefit everyone. One thing that I’m really proud of is becoming a “Marching Pearl Artist”! Right next to starting my own drum company, this endorsement is one of my biggest achievements!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Since I’m usually leading a group, I enjoy reading “The 5 Levels of Leadership” by John C. Maxwell. This book helps me to look at myself as a leader. It allows me to analyze my methods and acknowledge where I stand as a leader amongst my students as well as my peers. Also, “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz always keeps me in check when it comes to what really matters in life. The book offers a code of conduct that advocates freedom from self-limiting beliefs that may cause suffering and limitations in a person’s life.
