Hi Chiquita, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well, Skyn by Chi was birth through COVID-19. Starting a skincare line was something I’ve always dreamed of doing and was not included in my short-term goals. Once COVID-19 hit our country, my job in the airline industry was hit hard, and I volunteered to take a leave of absence from work to help the company financially. At that point, I knew I had to do something before I could possibly be unemployed. But it had to be something I would enjoy doing. About three weeks of being on leave, that one thing I only dreamed of doing started to become “real life”, and in such a short period of time. I didn’t realize what God had planned for me at the beginning stages because MY plan was to use the downtime off from work and deal with my own skin issues. I was dealing with an hormonal imbalance due to a hysterectomy that caused my face to breakout and resulted in emotional distress and scarred skin. After countless hours of researching effective ingredients that addressed my adult acne, hyperpigmentation, uneven texture, and dehydrated skin, I was inspired to create Skyn by Chi. I begin created and tested my skincare products on myself, close friends, and family, in which I saw amazing results. I also completed an online course in Beauty Industry Essentials and received a Certificate of Achievement by (FIT) Fashion Institute of Technology at the State University of New York. I learned so much from product design, social media presence, to the importance of ingredients. My instructors were industry experts from top brands like Allure, Bobbi Brown and many more. I launched Skyn by Chi on August 22, 2020 and it’s been one of the scariest yet rewarding experiences I’ve had in life so far. It almost feels like birthing a baby in a sense……
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, not at all! Like I said, it almost feels like birthing a baby. When first-time moms find out you’re pregnant, they immediately begin researching everything there is about pregnancy and being a mom. Being an entrepreneur and starting a business from scratch with not much experience is very similar and not the easiest. I’m a creator, an investor, photographer, marketing, editor, packer and shipper. I do it all and the feeling I get from it is like when a mother gives birth to their baby and it was the most painful thing ever experienced, and the question asked is… Would you do it all over again and the answer is YES with no hesitation. It’s been such a rewarding experience so far and I know it’s only up from here because it’s no going back for Chi (lol). I push and pull myself daily to do things I never thought I could do.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Well… I’m a proud New Orleans native. But I’ve been here in Atlanta for 18 years. I moved here when I was 19 years old. Atlanta has been truly good to me! I’ve have an amazing family here in Atlanta with my husband and our children. So I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished since being here in Atlanta. What do I like least about Atlanta? So this is easy… The Falcons!!!!! (Lol)
