Life & Work with Debbie Yaa Tyler of Atlanta

Hi Debbie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, art has always been part of me. As a kid, I mostly spent my time drawing. Thankfully, my parents allowed me to creatively explore my talent with no boundaries. I was fortunate to grow up with a supportive family that allowed me to express myself through creative means. My interests properly developed after High School. Waiting to start college, I fell into painting as a new hobby, not really thinking much of it. My first work was mainly cartoon characters, specifically The Simpson’s. From time to time, I would upload them to Instagram and surprisingly, the reactions I got every time were encouraging and supportive. Gradually, I discovered my own way of creating and interpreting art, and since then, I have been working on authentic pieces of my own.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every journey has its questionable moment, and from time to time, I encounter a few struggles. I would say it has progressively been a learning process. Not everyone will understand the meaning behind your work, which makes it hard to generate an audience who are supportive and interested in your work if they aren’t familiar with it. Deciding to sell my artwork was a tough one. It wasn’t likely to have people purchasing them or asking for commissioned works on a daily basis. And that’s the shortcoming of being an artist sometimes. It made me doubt my ability to excel. But God being extremely good to me, I had pursued an intervention in starting a clothing brand with a design collective from my artworks. And it has since been effective in gaining interests in my paintings.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a multidisciplinary artist/painter and an entrepreneur. I own a small business. It’s an online studio workspace where I sell my paintings, designed clothing apparel and essentials. I would say through my art, I’m known for my abstract geometric style of painting, from the vibrant colors and the expressions of deformed shapes. Alongside my Art and Business, I have a podcast of my own named ‘Intellect through Euphony’ where others might be familiar with. I launched the podcast at the beginning of this year, 2020, as a creative outlet to interact intellectually with other creatives and youths as myself. I am most proud of my God-given talent; I couldn’t possibly imagine being creative and pursuing my interests with just my capabilities without a gifted uniqueness. And I believe that what sets me apart, my style and dedication behind my crafts, is significantly different and versatile.
