Life and Work with Destiny Elliott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Elliott.

Destiny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The meaning of my first name, Destiny, sets the foundation of my story. It means to have control of what will happen in the future. I began to live by this definition in middle school when I pursued a modeling career in Columbus, Georgia. Yes– I was the student who towered over all of her classmates, strutted through the hallways with thousands of accessories on and enjoyed presenting projects in front of the class so modeling was second-nature to me. The first step I took to launch this career was researching the types of modeling I was interested in and fit for, which were runway, print, and editorial. Instantly, I created a booking email, designed an online portfolio and formed relationships with designers from the borderlines of Georgia and Alabama to the coasts of Virginia. My reputation strengthened at school and in the community as I am known as an inspiring model and a personality that entrepreneurs trust to host public events.

It was until high school that my gift for modeling merged with my passion for media. The success I gained from marketing my brand on social media paid off as I built my resume as a radio personality, newspaper writer, blogger and news reporter, and anchor before starting college. I got accepted into Georgia State University, where I am a senior journalism major. I continue my efforts to be heavily involved on campus, engaging with community service initiatives and embracing my purpose to be of service to the world. Two of many ways that I uphold my legacy is by being the Founder of the Destiny Elliott Journalism Scholarship, which is an annual book scholarship awarded to two high school seniors with plans to study journalism at a college and/or university. Furthermore, I am the CEO of Destiny Elliott PR & Marketing Firm, a public relations and marketing company that provides visibility and coins to entrepreneurs with fruitful businesses.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It costs to be a boss! While wearing many hats are appealing, there are some days that the load gets extremely heavy. Furthermore, maintaining being a full-time student, entrepreneur and a sister to depend on is a handful. There are no weekends off when final exams and papers are due in all five classes, a client books a Consultation at the same time of a study session and another girls’ brunch invite comes alerting through your phone. This is a prime example of my week in just three days. I have gotten accustomed to being so booked and busy that I have a travel kit in the trunk of my car and at work and I dress up every day just in case I am called for camera work. Although it seems as if every time I turn around, there is work to be done, I remind myself every day that I did not only choose this life. It chose me too.

Although my social media followers would agree that I always have something going on, please believe that spiritual healing is apart of that. Young women who are just starting their journey must first understand that there comes a time when the curtains close and cameras stop flashing and gaining a sense of self is the only job left to do. An entrepreneur who upholds a healthy mind, body, soul, and spirit will always be in popular demand because they invest in their inner being just as much as they serve the outside world. Whether that means practicing yoga, listening to birds sing or bumping Erykah Badu, young women should find a peaceful escape that makes their insides smile. Secondly, they must also be okay with not attending every event, especially if it is not mutually beneficial. They will know when an event is when conversations expand further than exchanging business cards.

Please tell us about Destiny Elliott PR & Marketing Firm; Destiny Elliott Journalism Scholarship.
I am the CEO of Destiny Elliott PR & Marketing Firm, where we are home to entrepreneurs with fruitful businesses. A fruitful business is nurtured with profitable seeds in order to reap a visible harvest. This means that our public relations and marketing services are designed to take an entrepreneurs’ idea from development to expansion. We provide a range of services from media relations, digital marketing and content creation to campaign development and brand management. Whether our clients represent a personal brand or large enterprise, there is no limit to what we can do for businesses that deserve to flourish.

Another staple that I sustain in the community is being Founder of the Destiny Elliott Journalism Scholarship. This book scholarship awards two graduating seniors who will study journalism or communications in higher education. This annual award is important to me because it is a platform that allows me to give back to my alma mater of G. W. Carver High School of Columbus. Our mission “to train up student journalists of today who will inspire and impact the media industry forever” is dear to my heart as I make local and global impacts in the lives of young professionals.

What sets me apart from others is that no one else can be Destiny Elliott. My talent, passion, and purpose is unmatched as my contributions in various categories of media and service is a gain to anything I am involved in. This divine reason is why a pineapple is embedded in my logo. Not only does it stand tall and wear a crown, but it also preserves a unique spiritual meaning– social warmth, true friendship, and southern hospitality.

Often it feels as if the media, by and large, is only focused on the obstacles faced by women, but we feel it’s important to also look for the opportunities. In your view, are there opportunities that you see that women are particularly well-positioned for?
There is nothing a woman cannot do! Our power to birth the world is a power within itself. Modern-day women are not only leading households but we are also influencing institutions to hear our stories. There are hundreds of movies that have premiered in the past five years about women breaking industrial molds within areas like technology and beauty. It is because of these reasons that more and more women are coming out of the woodworks to pitch business ideas and launch non-profit organizations. The increase of womanhood and diversity over time has created a trend of fearless and ground-breaking females. We have shifted from the mindset of working for a seat at the table with others. Instead, we are building the table so that our future generations are blessed!
