Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Green and Deborah Jones.
Where does the name Elena come from? It was our mother/grandmother’s middle name, Geraldine “Elena” Herbert. With her passing in 2015, we needed a way to keep her awesome spirit alive. She is the reason behind the creation of this business.
Ms. Elena and Deborah, her daughter, loved to sew. They took an adult sewing class when Deborah was only six years old! They fell in love with sewing from making their own suits, coats and even bathing suits! The creativity did not stop there. Deborah went on to share her love of everything crafty with her two daughters, Ebony and Alana. We love to create and design new things all the time. Now, the crafty tradition is being passed down to our youngest family member, Amani, Ebony’s daughter. We are sharing our passion with you one stitch at a time!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting started was the biggest challenge as we had no idea what we were doing or really getting into. We had so many ideas as to what we wanted “our business” to be. It wasn’t until we stopped trying to do business and just did what we were good at is when the business came alive. We are good at being creative, so that is what we focus on. Think about what you are good at and try not to compare yourself or your business to others. As long as you put the work in to be successful and stay true to what you love, then you will be successful. Believe the road will be bumpy and I would not suggest quitting your day job just yet, but it will be worth it when you can look back and see where you came from vs. NOW.
Please tell us about Elena’s Handcrafted Designs.
We design apparel for men and women of all shapes and sizes. One main reason we got into the business of fashion and apparel is that we are not shaped like the women we see on TV or in the magazines. Also, the quality of clothing and apparel these days are nothing like they used to be. We are known for our amazing craftsmanship, we are NOT perfect, but we do strive to be better with each piece that we create.
We are most proud that we are honoring Elena (our mother/grandmother) and staying true to what we love and that’s being creative. It’s a bonus that others love what we do too 🙂
What sets us apart is that you will never find another Deborah or Ebony (mother-daughter team) that gives you a little piece of us with each piece we make. We love what we do and you will feel that when you receive a handmade piece from us and that, my dear, is our superpower!
Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Deborah is not big on social media, but she loves audiobooks, one of her faves is the Daily Audio Bible. There are a ton of online resources for building a brand, creating your own business and being the best you possible. Most of them are great and I would suggest doing some research before jumping into any business. However, the best resource is talking to people who have done this before and ask them what works, what didn’t work and how did they make it. The art of conversation is golden!
