Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Idopise Umana.
Dr. Umana, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have been a physician for fourteen (14) years; practicing as a Primary Care Physician within a health system for the past ten (10) years. Due to individuals becoming increasingly overwhelmed with the pressures of life, more people are living with multiple stressors that can negatively impact their health, a trend that has steadily been rising within the last few years.
In June of 2018, the CDC released an alarming report that stated in the U.S., suicide has risen 25% over the last fifteen years. The report also revealed that in 2016, nearly 45,000 people died by suicide, and while some deaths were attributed to mental health disorders; many appeared to be related to individuals succumbing to the pressures of life.
According to the report relationships, physical health, employment, money, legal, and/or housing problems are often contributing factors to thoughts of suicide. While there is no debate that some may need medication, I strongly believe that individuals need a wellness plan that will educate them and improve their lives. Furthermore, having access to and engaging with quality, relevant, and timely health content is critical to well-being.
With the growing amount of misinformation available to consumers via the internet, the role of employers in facilitating health literacy has never been more important, which is why more than nine out of 10 employers plan to invest the same amount of money or more to improve the health literacy of their employees.
With so much focus on how one looks, the state of an individual’s mind is not always an area of focus. The Mind Gym at the Wellness Institute helps individuals create a “work out” regimen for the mind.
The Mind Gym was created to offer individuals a pro-active alternative to prevent and/or help counteract feelings that could potentially lead to suicide and/or other unhealthy behaviors, such as substance abuse and domestic violence via classes that empower the mind.
My journey in life has helped me understand that in order for one to live their best life, there has to be a holistic approach to wellness that includes mind, body, and spirit; with a very intentional focus on improving one’s ability to handle the stressors of life by training our mind.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to creating this business has been what I would describe as a “process.” I have learned to see the struggles or obstacle as an opportunity to strengthen my resolve, reevaluate the plan, and lean on my faith in God.
Though this process has had challenges along the way, it is a journey that is well worth it. Being able to venture into a new arena and creating a team that understands the vision has been a major accomplishment.
My advice for young women starting their journey is to understand their “why.” Why are you pursuing this goal? Why are you on this journey? When your “why” ties into your purpose, the struggles, obstacles, and challenges become a stepping stone for a testimony.
Please tell us about The Mind Gym at The Wellness Institute.”

Who have you been inspired by?
The women that have inspired me include the women in my immediate circle and a few public figures.
The women in in my family such as my mother- due to her all-encompassing love- a love that means that she will go the extra mile to make sure those she loves are taken care of. My aunts with their ongoing prayers, my best friend for her commitment to see each of my projects come to life and unrelenting support, my best friend’s mother with her ever faithful, unselfish giving of herself and time, and her ability to redefine life after retirement.
I am inspired by women in the public eye such Mellody Hobson and Michelle Obama because of their ability to transcend any stereotype and ascend from one particular arena in the workforce to accomplish in so many areas in their life.
