Today we’d like to introduce you to Izabela Alvarez.
Izabela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Accidental! How I began my journey in the beauty industry is all accidental. Growing up, the plan was for me to be a psychologist, go to a four-year college and eventually open up my own place to practice, but that is not at all how it went. It was freshmen year in high school that would forever change my life for the better when I was accidentally put into the cosmetology class, I was upset at first because I was supposed to be in health care so I fussed about for a couple of days, then I became okay with it. Little did I know, that being in the class would completely open up my heart to what my passion is today.
With my faith, amazing mentors and many challenges, I am beyond blessed to be where I am today. After high school, I attended Toni&Guy hairdressing academy in Marietta, BEST YEAR OF MY LIFE!! I met some of my life long friends there and many other incredible people including the President/CEO Elbert Ivory of Ei models. I am signed with him as a makeup and hair artist. I have done some really awesome shoots with him and have gotten to work on set of a fashion show in Atlanta. I also run my own makeup and hair business I do it all. Somehow someway I managed to start my own YouTube channel where I film makeup tutorials and vlog my daily life.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road was definitely not smooth, anything that could have gotten in the way did like self-doubt, outside options and family disapproval. The two biggest mottos I have and that kept me going and want all the women that read this to feel the same about is GIRL NEVER EVER GIVE UP!! No dream is too little or too big.
I am also very into my faith and if it wasn’t for the power of prayer, Lord, I don’t know, how I would’ve gotten through most of my struggles not only career-wise but also life. I also want to mention that ladies don’t ever feel like you need to rush to get to your goal, take your time, enjoy the journey and remember you are always where you are supposed to be!
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a licensed cosmetologist and makeup artist. I specialize in all hair and makeup events. Eventually, my goal is to be a total GIRL BOSS and travel and by traveling, I mean I want to be in Spain’s fashion week and in New York fashion week as well as working on film sets.
I feel like I am known for making women feel and look beautiful in their own skin by just enhancing the beauty they already have. That is also what I am most proud of as a brand my goal with every client male and female is to make them feel confident, because you never know what they may be going through, to me it seems like just a haircut or just doing their makeup, but to them, it’s so much more.
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
For me, finding a mentor is all about not being afraid to ask for help. There is some in every industry that can find a mentor, you have to be open-minded and remember as cliché as it sounds, NO QUESTION IS A DUMB QUESTION!! That’s what helped me I was eager to learn and very open-minded and found that there are still some genuine and kind souls that still exist in this toxic world, that are willing guide you, believe in you, want to see you succeed and want you to pick their brains for knowledge! I must say I have some pretty awesome mentors and will forever be beyond grateful for them, they are such blessings in my life.
