Life and Work with Leah Gordone

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Gordone.

As a YouTuber, Leah Gordone has earned a subscriber base totaling more than 100,000+. Professionally, she is an educator, published writer, editor, correspondent, content creator, and mentor. Originally from Fayetteville, NC she graduated from Fayetteville State University with a Bachelors in Communications/Speech before moving to Atlanta, GA to pursue a career in media. After arriving in Atlanta she eventually landed a position as the Executive Beauty Director for Kontrol Magazine, allowing her to interview celebrities like Naturi Naughton and Yandy Smith, and work as a correspondent for events and red carpets.

While in Atlanta, Leah also started her first business, Budget Beauty, which provided affordable cosmetic products specifically to benefit African American women and college-aged girls. She closed Budget Beauty at the beginning of this year to start her own cosmetics company, Gordone Cosmetics, which offers a collection of premium quality, cruelty-free, and affordable cosmetics to women of color. The brand currently carries lipsticks, lip glosses, color palettes, eyeshadows, and a couple of natural hair care products as well.

Earlier this year, Leah graduated with her Masters in Education for School Counseling from Liberty University and is currently pursuing a career as a School Counselor. She plans to eventually go back to receive her Ph.D.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been several bumps in the road. It is not easy especially financing your own business. But never think small. Some days, I want to give up. But through prayer and the support of my clients, friends, and family, I keep pushing every day. If you want to start a business, keep your goal at the center of your attention. Don’t let any distractions or your surroundings deter you from that goal.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a published writer and full-time content contributor to YouTube. I have been known for my beauty videos, college vlogs and #Leahtalks on YouTube. Not only do I work in the cyber world, but I’m also an educator. I have a bachelor of arts degree in Communications and Speech and recently completed my Master’s of Education in School Counseling. Throughout college, I worked with retailers such as Bobbi Brown, Dior, and Sephora. I love learning about cosmetics and how they compliment our beauty. My interest is helping women of color find great products to insinuate their gorgeous melanin. As a writer, I have been able to talk to powerful women of color of all walks of life and I’m proud to be able to create something for them. What makes my brand different than others is my price point and experience. Although my products are affordable it does not lessen the experience. You will feel the luxury experience from the tough, look, feel, and service provided when you shop with Gordoné Cosmetics.

Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
My childhood experience was somewhat difficult. I didn’t quite understand who I was. Sometimes, I still struggle with that. However, the more I live and learn from my experiences in life, it pushes me to be a better me today.
