Life and Work with Madi Rose Chivington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madi Rose Chivington.

Madi Rose, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started my business, Rose + Mae Hair in August of 2016. Owning a hair salon was something I dreamed of since I can remember, but I never expected it to happen at 24. my grandmother owned her own salon in the 50’s, and I always aspired to follow in her footsteps. Once Rose + Mae opened, it grew faster than I had ever anticipated and by August 2017 It had grown from a 1 chair suite to a fully staffed 5 chair salon. Thankful is an understatement, I always had big dreams but Rose + Mae has grown to something bigger than I thought possible.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a Smooth road, there have been many road blocks & lessons learned the hard way. There have been many situations I was taken advantage of, and also situations where I simply made the wrong or a dumb decision. But hey, you don’t know what you don’t know!

I hesitated to ask for help or guidance, in the beginning, I felt I was supposed to figure out all the obstacles on my own, my family and friends could give me as much advice as they wanted, but they didn’t know the ins and outs of what I was doing. This not only had me feeling very alone (a common feeling for an entrepreneur, I’ve learned.) but It also ended me in some “not so great” and absolutely avoidable situations. but again, you don’t know what you don’t know! I was just trying my best.

This leads me to my most important word of advice for any young woman wanting to start a business, get a business coach! That was the best decision I ever made as a young, woman, business owner. let me be the first to tell you, you are not supposed to know it all, and you absolutely are not supposed to do this alone! My business coach has introduced me to a network of trustworthy people that help me run my business. Those are the hardest, but most important people to find. Knowing you have someone with your best interest in mind to help you with any curveball that may be thrown your way is very comforting, and someone with tremendous amounts of experience with whatever you are dealing with.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Rose + Mae Hair Salon – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize In color, I mostly do balayage, blondes, and women’s hair, most everyone at Rose + Mae specializes in color, but also do an assortment of different things! for example our stylist Annie is amazing at men’s cuts, and tory does some insane custom extensions!

It’s amazing coming Into work every day and seeing our team working, and thriving doing what they love. Rose + Mae Hair is a really happy and uplifting place and clients can see & feel that. If anything sets Rose + Mae apart, it’s our environment. I think I can truly say our vibe in the salon is unmatched in the city, and that’s something I am extremely proud of. I wanted Rose + Mae to feel like a safe space for anyone to come to get their hair done, I want clients to feel like they are hanging out with a friend while getting their dream hair! But we aren’t just doing hair here, we are building relationships with our clients and empowering each other, it really is a magical thing.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
Always keep a good support system around you, people that you trust, that you know will always have your best intentions in mind… but most importantly, always have a lawyer read over anything you sign!
