Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison James.
Madison, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m from Jackson TN. A small town between Memphis and Nashville TN… I was very active in sports growing up basketball, volleyball and track. Which lead to a Division I Full basketball scholarship. While in college is where I discovered Radio. I took a speech class and it just came natural to me. After class I approached the teacher to ask about changing my major to communications. Dr. Norton goes I was just about to suggest you do the same. After many internships at local radio stations I realized that I can make a career out of this. The day after graduation I went to work full-time on-air doing Middays at a Top 40 station in Jackson TN. After working in the market for 11 months I got experience in many different formats. Which then I decided to spread my wings, I got an opportunity to move to Greenville, SC where I was a part of something special. Cox Media had just launched a Rhythmic station called Hot 98.1. This would be the start to my now 17-year career with Cox Media Group. In 2013, I moved to Atlanta Georgia where I’m the afternoon drive host on WSB-FM (B98.5, Atlanta’s most listened to radio station). I never wanted to limit myself I wanted to keep pushing and growing which open the door for TV and print work for Cox Media. Featured on the syndicated entertainment magazine ‘Hot Topics’ (seen in Atlanta, GA on WSB-TV, Charlotte, NC on WSOC-TV and Orlando, FL on WFTV-TV) and host of WSB-TV’s ‘460’. Plus sharing my love for health and wellness as a regular contributor to the Atlanta Journal Constitution giving easy fitness, nutritional and healthy lifestyle tips.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has not been smooth. I have faced challenges from being without a job, to people wanting to limit my possibilities in the business. My advice to young woman starting their journey. I would say know who you are and what separates you from the pack, and stay true to yourself. Very key surround yourself with people who support you and push you to be better. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions you can’t learn and grow without knowledge!
I’m currently on the air Afternoon Drive on B98.5 FM 2-7pm here in Atlanta. I’m most proud of my ability to connect with people. My platform has allowed me to be involved with some great organizations here in Atlanta. Such as Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta, the Atlanta Beltline, DIG and many more. I love to share my passion of health and wellness, supporting women and empowering people to live their best life.
Were there people and/or experiences you had in your childhood that you feel laid the foundation for your success?
Sports and family support! My parents raised me by saying anything is possible. But you have to put in the work. That was just multiplied through sports! In sports you win and you lose. But it’s what you do with the losses that I feel mold you. Can you learn from your mistakes? Can you stay motivated, keep improving and fine tuning your craft when nobody is watching? Sports taught me all of that. It builds great character. Team sports teach you how to work will with others. You can’t accomplish goals by yourself.
