Life & Work with Marisa Mustard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marisa Mustard.

Hi Marisa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been enjoyed creating things. I never thought about being a full time artist, to be honest when I graduated high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I attended the university of Georgia for a little while and then dropped out and moved to Alaska to work the salmon run. It was hard work but I earned a good bit of money and was able to move to New Orleans and pay a few months’ rent in advance. I got a job at a coffee shop and worked there for a while but didn’t really like it and figured since I had rent paid for a while, I’d quit and do something I really enjoyed which was painting. New Orleans is such an inspiring and creative town. I lived there for a while then took a road trip and absolutely fell in love with New Mexico. I moved out to Arryo Seco, NM and continued painting out there and actually wrote, illustrated & published a children’s book out there. I lived there for a year then found out I was pregnant, I moved back to Georgia once I found out and I’m so glad I did. I have such a wonderful and loving community here.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I mean I was poor for a long time. But everyone has money problems when they’re young and I figured I’d rather be poor doing what I love than a little richer and hating my job. Such a wonderful decision.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I mostly paint murals and instruments for people. I love painting functional art. I mostly do floral and nature inspired art.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see the industry growing over the next few years. There’s been an increasing amount of grants being offered in the art world lately.
