Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Dyer.
Hi Nathan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story starts in Detroit, Michigan. My first ever public speaking event that I remember was reading the anniversary list at Greater Grace Temple, I knew we had something there. Fast forward, in high school after I moved to VA, I began covering sports for the school and reading the announcements sometimes. When I got to college, I began as a co-host for a show called “keeping up,” and I eventually took that over. My sophomore year I became the business manager for that same station. I couldn’t stand the politics of why certain things couldn’t happen with what events I wanted people to spend money with. so I then transferred over to program manager, where I controlled what went in rotation, we were in business.
As I began to love being a program manager, I hated being censored (college online radio has to follow fcc rules) and around then I started to take a liking to Joe Budden Podcast & Taxstone’s “Tax season” (freetax) and I knew this was where the culture was headed. I knew to sell this I had to grab two people that not only I loved, but everyone did. So my good friends Manny Smalls & Kayla Sparks and we began “ThickSkinPodcast” in the summer of ‘18. In the winter of 2019, I moved to Atlanta, ending ThickSkinPodcast. At that point, I wasn’t sure how to keep the ball rolling because I was adamant about not doing a podcast by myself. After about a year of failed attempts of finding a female co-host, in January 2020, after gaining membership at the gathering spot a month prior by recommendation from my cousin. For the first few weeks, we were rolling and then COVID hit. I was on pause for four months, and then I secured a new apartment, found an old microphone and Kickin’ up dust has been rolling consistently ever since.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not, I moved away from my first ever podcast and everything I knew for 4.5 years at the height of our run to a city where I knew like two people. ATLANTA at that, everyone comes here to be a star, it was very humbling. The first episode of the podcast was initially supposed to come out in Oct. 2019, but my videographer that day got arrested and my backup guy gave me peanuts to work with. Of course, the pandemic and trying to figure out retainership and marketing is an ongoing struggle. Lastly, I am currently looking for a woman co-host as well, so y’all are watching it grow in real-time. We’re all growing together.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?NateTV23 is the brand, under that umbrella is “Kickin’ Up Dust,” the podcast as well as “NateTV”. Nate TV is my YouTube channel where I do album/project reviews, artist interviews, me at events, and occasional podcast visuals. I specialize in Podcasting, A&R’ing, and some Voice Acting. I’d say I’m most known for my blunt and unapologetic takes on just about anything in black culture as well as my voice in general. The minute I tell someone I do podcasts, they say, “Yeah, you sound like it” Outside of me constantly doing activities to sharpen my media personality in all fronts (radio, announcements, DJ’ing, podcasting etc.) There’s not much thought into how to execute my content. I’m very big on organic and letting things flow naturally. Not because I’m lazy, but I’ve always been a firm believer and letting whatever is gonna happen, happen when it comes to creativity, controlling art in its purest form is a difficult task, and I think that’s what sets me apart. You’ll never see anything forced from me, if I’m not feeling it then I won’t be associated with it. I’m most proud of the fact that I’m not to cool to put myself out there. I’ll shoot my networking shot in a heartbeat, ill let the entire room know why I’m there and what I have to offer. At the end of the day, you can never say I didn’t try.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
First lesson: ADAPT TO EVERYTHING, you never know what curveballs are coming, so always move accordingly the second lesson: take tomorrow out of your head, there’s no guarantee for any kind of second chance or opportunity.
