Life and Work with Samone Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samone Harris.

Samone, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I began acting in Waco, Texas it took time for me to adjust to it and get comfortable, because I would say to myself where do I start? Acting all together is a hit and miss, and I can only imagine that if you don’t start at a young age it is nearly impossible but once I performed in my first playback in 2012 and stepped out of my comfort zone, I LOVED it. Then I went to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas to study more about acting and I got my Bachelor’s Degree in Performing Arts.

After I graduated college in 2016, I moved to Atlanta because I wanted to be in a different environment and improve my skillset. Not only did the classes teach me other ways to use my craft, but they also put me under pressure to become a better actress. I had to study my favorite films to learn about important techniques – such as character development, physicality, diction, and reacting – from my favorite actors and actresses. Going to local plays and supporting other actors to see how they use their craft also inspired me. I absorbed everything I saw.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has definitely not been smooth. There are struggles – especially when you have self-doubt. I heard so many NO’s that it made me feel low and down. Being a prideful person didn’t help, but with my support system, I have to keep pushing and never quit. The advice that I can give to other women, especially young women starting out, is don’t stop. You’re going to get a thousand NO’s before you get that one YES. Develop a support system, whether it’s big or small. If you’re serious about acting, take classes and begin to work on your craft now. STUDY, PRACTICE & WORK. Don’t forget to observe others and apply it to your acting.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I do television, film and theater. Once I moved from Texas to Atlanta, I just got out of doing background acting and I started working on a web series that I wrote back in 2014 called “Our Circle” which will be coming out in winter of 2019. I have been in other series throughout the year. I am most proud of my craft as an actor and grateful for the support system that I have. What sets me apart from others is that I have learned to venture into other areas in this industry including writing, producing and directing. It was challenging at first but I was obsessed with it.

Do you think there are structural or other barriers impeding the emergence of more female leaders?
I feel that with the industry that I chose the women is still pushing to reach the top. Women aren’t begin taken seriously and we are always known for being less than and not smart enough. It is these issues that are preventing many women from achieving their goal of becoming a leader at their company and diminishing their ability to get ahead in business. Women leaders are still a minority. and it comes as no surprise to most of us; what is surprising is that men outpace women in leadership roles across every sector in the world.
