Life and Work with Shanithia Kendrick

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanithia Kendrick.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shanithia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2009, I was in college determined to be a traveling nurse. I was getting ready for my last year in core classes and preparing to submit my packet for acceptance in the school of nursing. I was also actively involved in a campus ministry because I couldn’t go to my home church. All that was standing in my way at the time was one human anatomy lab. After failing the class twice and knowing my school had three strikes and you are out of the policy, I was ready to throw in the towel. I knew I would need a “GPA booster” to help keep my grades up so I enrolled in a women and gender studies class. That class was the beginning of me seeing my passion blossom for women’s ministry. I finished my degree and I thought that would be the start of ministry for me. The campus ministry I was once apart of was evolving quickly into a city church. I took what I learned from my degree and helped my First Lady start a women’s ministry for our church. We planned and executed many events that blessed so many women and added so many souls to the body of Christ. I was excited, but I still felt like it was more I could do.

After graduation, my advisor told me I would need to look into a masters program to do the work I was really passionate about. With that in mind, I began to seek God on what my next degree would be in. I knew I had a love for women and gender studies so I figured why not go for a masters in the same subject? Nope. I was wrong. I talked to my advisor and she told me my GPA wasn’t high enough to complete, thanks anatomy lab. So, I took my disappointment and started to pay attention to the problems people would bring my way. I realized they all had one thing in common: they required wisdom, which I had tons of. From there, I decided to get my masters in clinical mental health and pursue professional licensure in my field. In the midst of all that, I started my blog back on a new platform, published my first book, and released my first t-shirt.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was absolutely not a smooth road. I once heard a great man of God say “destiny is not a straight line. It is a journey filled with many hills and valleys.” This is a constant reminder to me that life is not perfect. If you live life for just the beginning and the end, you will never know the satisfaction of trusting God. Life is not easy for anyone. My advice to any women who is just starting her journey “Slay In Your Lane!!” Don’t let the theft of comparison, envy, or jealousy rob you of the goodness of life. You can’t drive and look over your shoulder at the same time. You will cause an accident. And the worst accident you can cause it’s loosing your authentic self. There is nobody in the entire world who can do what you do as good as you. The grave is the richest place in the world filled with unrealized purpose, forget about dreams, and dead destiny. Don’t let your treasure be found there.

Please tell us about Hyquality Counseling.
I am a therapist, author, and blogger. I started Hyquality Counseling at first just to get paid from a small side job. Since leaving that job, I have developed it into multiple things. I built a brand under the name hyquality because I felt the world was missing a standard for Christian women. With this brand, I plan on setting a new standard through faith, womanhood, and therapy. This is what sets my business apart from others. I believe that we are multi-dimensional beings. Gone are the days of women being crafted and shaped into two roles: wife and mom. I think those titles are incredible, but I know we are so much more than that. I choose to explore that more from a lens of faith that encourages women to value womanhood and get healed through therapy.

What advice would you give to someone at the start of her career?
The most important piece of advice I can give a woman starting her career is: do not be afraid. Whatever you believe, it’s your purpose, calling, or destiny, do it with all the fear you are and will experience. Make up in your mind and heart that “scary” days will come and you won’t always be comfortable but you will do it despite what you feel. Don’t allow emotions to hold you back. Feelings change, but your purpose is forever.
